Lookin’ back/On the track/For a little Green Shack (sorry)

I was returning some books to the Old Strathcona Library recently, when I noticed a whole little party-style setup just South of the building. We’re talking picnic tables, art supplies, a cute little shelf that said “Outdoor Reading Room.”

Because I live in the neighbourhood and had never noticed this before, I wondered what the deal was. Was this for hobos? Was it for school children? Could I fingerpaint something and then read a Babysitter’s Club book? Would I be judged for asking?

I wandered around taking a few pictures, much to the chagrin of passers-by, who all looked at me like I was going to snatch somebody’s baby. What am I, Peter File over here?

outdoorreadinggreen-shackAnyway, as I took some pictures, I noticed a dubious-faced City of Edmonton employee (I could tell by her t-shirt) approaching. I asked her about the program, and gave her my business card (yes, I actually have a business card) and then, once she realized I wasn’t a pervert, she was super nice and helpful, and suggested I check out the City’ssign website for more details.

Basically, there are these little green shacks all over the place that are used for children’s drop-in programs, all summer long.

If you’re looking for one in your neighbourhood, you can call 311, or visit your community league’s website, they may have some more info.

…I wish there was a free drop-in program for adults. The City could put green shacks all over Edmonton with beer and lawn darts in them.

I was a ‘green shack girl’ for two summers. I am glad they are still running the program – I am certain it makes a huge positive impact on communities, and especially in the lives of the kids. I had a moose run through my park once. Good times.

The green shacks are also a good sign that summer has come to Edmonton!

Were you really? I’m so jealous. It looks like such a sweet deal, sitting in the sun, painting and doing crafts.

Haha best idea ever! I could go for a green shack with beer. And maybe lawn bowling.

I also used to work for the Green Shack program. One summer the city and I actually did try implementing a program for adults in Churchill Square (from noon to one). It didn’t really catch on, and ended up being mostly a few of my friends who worked downtown at the time and I playing extreme Bocce. We didn’t think of bringing beer though, that would have helped. Mandel did stop by one day to throw the football around a bit with me, that was pretty fun. The whole point was to encourage adults to be more active.

Trevor, we need to bring this back. We need drunken* bocce in Churchill Sqaure every lunch hour.

I need a bat-phone to the Mayor’s office for these kinds of things.

(*Recogizing you didn’t have beer the first time around.)
