So, I’m what you might call “socially anxious.”
For you laypeople, this means that when it comes to “doing things socially,” I generally “don’t.” In fact, I’m typically the first to leave a party, or flee the scene of whatever fun activity someone else has laboriously planned. Festivals, concerts, movies, parties – I dodge them all. I’m a “stay at home and watch reruns of Laverne & Shirley” kind of girl.
Yes, when it comes to overcoming my irrational fear of social situations, I’m a hard, hard sell (TWSS); so if you’re going to get me out to your event, there are a few things you’re gonna need.
An Elvis impersonator is a good start.
A guy on stilts also helps.
Pre-teen boys wailing each other with balloon animals are also good.
…and finally, a giant outdoor movie screen showing pretty much any computer animated film for children (except those terrifying Care Bear movies that they always run on Movie Central).
Yep, on Friday night, we stumbled onto Movies on the Square – something I didn’t even know existed. If you haven’t been, it’s pretty much like a having a giant group of friends over to watch a movie. If your group of friends includes an Elvis impersonator, a couple of guys on stilts, hundreds of small children, a mini donut guy and a DJ. And also, if your TV is like 3 stories high and inflatable. Then it’s pretty much exactly the same.

This weekend’s movies were Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa (thanks to all my twitter friends for filling me on that one), and on Saturday, it was going to be Kung Fu Panda; but last I heard, it was being called off because of the horrible weather.
Anyway, the next Movies on the Square weekend will be September 4 and 5, with movie titles TBA.
Those kids didn’t have balloon animals, they had balloon swords.
But I like to think they’d still have wailed on each other’s faces even with balloon animals.
