I get knocked down, but I get up again.

Last night, I was at my local neighbourhood convenience store, acquiring a delicious soda beverage. On my way home, I saw this poster:

It caught my eye because it said things like “BE THERE” and “DANCE PARTY” and …wait, what?

…CHUMBAWUMBA*WAMBA? CHUMBA -WHAT-A? Is this true?

So I visited Chumbawumbawamba’s website and found out what most of you likely know already; the CW is going to be here this weekend for Folk Fest. And a quick perusal of facebook proves that, yes, in fact, Chumbawumbawamba will be playing the Punx Picnic at the Hydeaway. Well I’ll be. I’d love to go, but I’m not convinced my self-esteem would ever recover from sitting in a room full of young hipsters, all of whom are likely enjoying the b-sides and rarities from Chumbawumbawamba’s vast back catalogue of materials, while I sit there in my Jon Secada t-shirt, drinking Crystal Pepsi, waiting for “Tubthumping.”

OLD!

Chumbuwumba is going through some strange identity crisis. Recently they released a mellow (but decent) folk album and are trying to make a return to pop via nowhere. It might not be a bad idea to see them at The Hydeaway. I think most of the hipsters will be at the folk fest. However, your Jon Secada t-shirt will get stained with dread-lock juice and vegan soda.

I call bullsh*t on Crystal Pepsi. You can’t find that anywhere locally. I’ve looked.

    Hearts,

    Aaron Levin

    PS – Thanks!

I have a supplier : http://tinyurl.com/nhjoga Only 33 dollars American per 16 oz bottle. BARGAIN! but after 15 years, it comes out more like Crystal Gravy then Crystal pepsi.

They are playing now as ‘Chumbawumba Acoustic’, which is quite folky. Think accordian. I’ve seen them a few times in the past few years, and every time someone in the crowd shouts out “Play Tubthumping”, the band usually tells the heckler to f-off.

Sorry to derail this Chumba-Love Train with an abrupt change of topic, but is that Aaron Levin of ’25 to Life’ fame? Best show on the radio!

  5. Sally says:

Really?! They’re one of those bands like Madness (guess who watched the vh1 one hit wonders special this weekend) that i think has maintained a pretty good following, am I right?

  6. Jeff says:

I love the fact they say Chumbawamba (seriously) because people wouldn’t believe it was the real Chumbawamba.

    Accept no substitutions!

If I remember correctly from the last time they played FF, the “Tubthumping” album was a bit of a departure for them…they started off punk and have been moving to a folkier sound over time. Think Billy Bragg.

  8. Cee bee says:

    Chumbawamba right? And not chumbawumba??

  9. Sally says:

Wow, good catch! Poor CW, I’m not giving them nearly the respect they deserve. :\

  10. Ryan says:

Hey! Corrodead is playing! Seriously? Sounds like a band that would have a song called “Trouble, rum and cigarettes.”

I bet my friend $5 that they would play “Tubthumping” when they played Folk Fest in 2006. I lost the bet, which ruined what might have been an otherwise enjoyable set.
