01/11/10 Edmonton Headlines

Good morning to you, Edmonton.

Normally I don’t use the numeric date, but I dig all those zeroes and ones.

I hope you had a chance to get outside, maybe build a few snowmen, this weekend. Can you believe we are still on the plus side of zero degrees today? Looks like we’re back into freezing temperatures by the end of the week so let’s all remember to enjoy this respite from winter’s icy grip.

It’s not exactly Edmonton news, but Edmonton’s newsrooms are all over it, so here are a couple of links to the Wiebo Ludwig story up in northwestern Alberta. CTV’s got some information on the RCMP telling Ludwig they’ve got DNA evidence in the B.C. pipeline bombings, CBC has more on his arrest, 10 hours of questioning, and subsequent release without charge, while the Sun can fill you in on the big-time interrogator brought in. It’s certainly a story worth following, and being in the largest city near the action you know our city’s newsrooms will be covering the story.

Now, on with the Edmonton stuff.

from the Edmonton Journal:

Wildrose Party adds life to boring Alberta politics (Stop having a boring tuna, stop having a boring life.)

Dickinsfield’s young Dickenses (Here’s your inspiring story of the day.)

Alberta’s year of change (Gazing into the crystal ball…)

from the Edmonton Sun:

from the Edmonton Examiner:

from Metro Edmonton:

Deep Freeze ‘changing’ 118 Avenue

Five-year-old girl dead after snowmobile collision (The saddest part is that nobody was wearing a helmet.)

from 630CHED/iNews880:

Christmas tree collection starts Monday (Hey, that’s today!)

from CBC Edmonton:

Brace for cuts to arts: Alberta Minister

Funerals held for 2 Alberta soldiers killed in Afghanistan (There’s one more today, one tomorow, and a Calgary Herald reporter’s funeral is also today.)

from CTV Edmonton:

Mock bottle drive to highlight cuts to social services

Volunteers come out for earth-friendly move

from Global Edmonton:

Thanks for stopping by. Let me know if there are stories out there I missed.

ZOMG PRICES ARE RISING?!?! Who could have predicted that prices of stuff would gradually rise over time?!?!? THIS JUST IN! WHAT A SCOOP! That’s your Edmonton’s Journalistic Community, always digging for the gold!
Really, Mike Untereiner? You feel the need to chastise the government for raising the price of stamps by 3 cents? Really feeling the sting from those 3 letters you mail every month, huh? Tell you what, if it’s really that big of a deal, why don’t you just drive the letters over yourself? Surely it couldn’t cost more than 57 cents in gas to drive a letter to, say, Winnipeg…

My apologies to Edmonton’s Journalistic Community. There are a few of you out there who are still doing a good job.

  2. Derjis says:

haha, sorry again… that came off a lot harsher than intended… :)

  3. Jeff says:

    No. Not harsh at all.

Also, can I borrow 3 cents?

  4. Derjis says:

I wonder how much it costs to send soup through the mail now…? The story didn’t mention that…

  5. Jeff says:

Hmm…let me check the handy price increase list I got in the mail today!

Alright…soup would probably have to be sent in a non-standard/oversize package…let’s go with one cup of soup (250g)…that would be $2.75.

But…if you just sent some Tim Hortons gift cards in the mail they could buy soup, and it would only cost you $0.57. (Three cents less if you bought permanent stamps before today.)

Why did I waste so much time on this?

  6. Paul says:

    Haycation?

If that term catches on, I will hunt you down and give you a bare assed spanking.

  7. Derjis says:

JEFF, YOU ARE PUTTING CITYTV OUT OF BUSINESS!!!!! If there are layoffs in the Citytv news department, IT’S ON YOUR HEAD.

  8. Jeff says:

Whoa, whoa, whoa! I think we all just need to chillax.

Derjis, I’m not responsible for nothin’.

Paul, that term is in the story. Leave me out of your vendetta.
