January 22 Edmonton Headlines

Welcome to the end of another week, Edmonton.

We’re certainly ending it with some interesting weather. It’s cold, but it could sort of rain (freezing drizzle they call it). But what is winter without some wacky weather? Just be careful out there on the sidewalks and such.

There’s actually a lot of news today. So I won’t even bother droning on and on. Just get to it!

from the Edmonton Journal:

Lawyer criticizes shooting probe (What is the point of an independent organization investigating police-related injury and death if they won’t do it?)

Great minds think alike, Duckett says (Except I don’t know if all this health care business involves enough “great” minds.)

Wait times scrutinized by Alberta health superboard

Liberals question role of parliamentary assistants (Here’s the role: earn more money.)

Nisku factory moving to Ontario (*gulp*)

Car lot’s departure signals new opportunity (Healy Ford leaves downtown.)

124th Street blossoming as rival to Whyte Avenue (Can’t we all get along?)

Winspear backs out of MMA contract (So who the heck booked it, if it doesn’t work for all of those reasons?)

Confiscation of anti-nuke signs draw Peace River protest

from the Edmonton Sun:

Beaten bus driver mending (Great to hear!)

Tougher bylaw eyed for vicious dogs

Traffic blitz nabs 869 drivers (We have a need. For speed.)

Bankruptcy rate in Alberta falls

from The Canadian Press:

Edmonton firm pays $15K in restitution in Filipino worker recruitment scam

from Metro Edmonton:

Edmonton officials crackdown on hoarders (So our municipal government does whatever A&E shows tell them?)

from 630CHED/iNews880:

City’s crime rate drops slightly: Chief Boyd (That’s a good news story.)

Alberta EI claims are on the rise (And how!)

from CBC Edmonton:

Northern school board dismissed

Close York Hotel now: safety officers (Or maybe just have one big blowout weekend and it will end up burned to the ground, saving you money on demolition.)

Frustration mounts in Leduc elevator saga

from CTV Edmonton:

Zwozdesky blames spike in population as reason for changes (Hmm…I don’t know if I buy this. We are actually losing people to other provinces.)

from Global Edmonton:

Bettman bets on new arena (Well, if we’re all going to put our support in what Gary Bettman says…)

from The Gateway (U of A):

Fentiman assumes presidential vacancy (Again, there’s interesting stuff afoot in U of A student politics.)

Political Science professors condemn prorogation, call for electoral reform

Haha, I almost did a spit-take when I read your comment about the York Hotel. I used to work at the downtown police HQ and I parked my car a couple lots behind the York… I would walk down the middle of the street so as not to have to pass crazies on either side!
