Waffle Headlines

I found a waffle on display on a topping table outside the food truck.

Good morning, Edmonton!

We’re going with a breakfast theme today. Now, I know these headlines aren’t always ready for the usual coffee and newspaper crowd (Hey, I’m not a morning person) but I do try to get them done in the AM. Today, it makes sense to have them done in the morning since I’m opening with waffles.

(For anybody who just wants news of the day, and not whatever I’m about to go on and on about, just skip on down.)

Eva Sweet, waffle van

Eva Sweet Waffles is a portable Belgian waffle house.

I was doing my rounds of the news sites this morning and popped over to Brittney’s blog. She was talking about the waffle truck I’ve seen people tweeting about.

Once I saw that it starts the day (7am) right by the Legislature I knew where I was stopping on the way to work. (107 Street and 99 Avenue is right by the Government Centre transit station, for you fellow transit riders.)

I didn’t know what my options were, but Bamir Basha (A man I will refer to as Edmonton’s Waffle King.) was conversational and ready to chat waffles with a newbie like me. I went for the cinnamon waffle. They also have vanilla and maple.

Fruit topping, anyone?

Through a combination of chatting with Bamir, reading Brittney’s blog post, and checking out the Eva Sweet Waffles website, I learned Bamir ran a waffle truck in Belgium (Wow, could he have any more street cred?) and recently got the truck going in Edmonton with his wife.

Bamir does the wafflery each morning and makes sure it’s fresh. I only waited for my waffle a few minutes and it was hot in my hands. You can add fruit toppings (I think syrup too?) or just take it like that. They prepare a waffle known as “Liege” which is thicker and a little different from what we may be used to. This ain’t no Eggo.

Yum! Check out the size of that waffle.

I went with the waffle as-is and I wasn’t left wanting toppings. It was just a little crispy on the outside and really soft and fluffy inside. The cinnamon flavour shot through, and next time I’m going to try vanilla. The waffle is pretty large, but can be held in one hand. Well worth the $3, and a fantastic addition to Edmonton’s street food scene.

If you follow Eva Sweet on Twitter you can get a heads up on where and when they’ll be somewhere in Edmonton.

And if I haven’t done enough to convince you to try out a waffle, their brief web story will surely do the trick:

The story of Eva Sweet is a story of international intrigue.  It is a story that involves love, drama, family, loss and a dream coming true.  It is a tale of crossed borders,  migrant workers, secret meetups, family tragedies, forced separations, and bittersweet reunions. More importantly, it is a story about waffles.  If you yearn to know more, we just might tell you over a waffle and some coffee.

from the Edmonton Journal:

Health Centre already vital link (I like that it took Alberta Health Services three weeks to fire off a letter to the editor. They talk about what’s already happening at the East Edmonton Health Centre but don’t dispute what Paula Simons said weeks ago about large, and important, sections remaining empty and unused.)

Hmm…maybe “sexsomnia” explains why I’m always so tired. Or I could just go to bed earlier. No, it’s sexsomnia.

I tried, but failed, to get the entire waffle into my mouth.

I think we all know who needs to run the Edmonton Indy:

    p.s. wasn’t that story from last week…?

    Stupid lack-of-edit button.
Let’s see if THIS LINK WILL WORK PROPERLY.

If it doesn’t, your faithful readers will have to copy-and-paste the link
    :(

  3. Jeff says:

Yeah, I did a double-take on the Indy story, but after checking my previous headlines I confirmed it’s new.

The difference? Last week was “Northlands will pull out,” followed by “City looks for independent operator in case Northlands wants out,” and now we’ve got Northlands out of the race.”

    This story’s got legs!

  4. Derjis says:

Wheels. The story’s got ‘wheels’. What kind of newsman are you, passing up the opportunity to use a terrible pun?!?

  5. tricotmiss says:

I don’t understand why we’re even considering extending the Indy…why spend time and money to find a sponsor for an event we’re already in debt for. I don’t understand it.

  6. Jeff says:

One upside of the Indy having private operators would be that City Hall (and you and me) wouldn’t be on the hook anymore.

Though, I bet they’ll want help with a track, and advertising, and tax concessions and everything else seemingly independent business always asks for from government. But I could just be being cynical.

  7. Gord says:

What?! The waffle is only $3? I was expecting $5 or $6. I just caught the Bobby Flay throw-down episode with the Waffle guy in NYC last week, and my wife and I were talking about how awesome it would be to try a liege waffle.

  8. Jeff says:

Yeah, $3. And for the size of the waffle I’d say that is a pretty good deal.
They also hit up two farmers’ markets during the week (Beverly and Alberta Avenue) so you don’t even have to wake up early.

  9. Derjis says:

All Betty White would ask is a handful of butterscotch candies…

  10. Sam says:

Waffles! I’m definitely trying that the next time I take the 52 downtown.

  11. Jeff says:

    You sure do!
They sit on 107 Street, just north of 99 Avenue. Which is steps, mere steps, from one of the 52′s stops.
