Boxing Day shopping (carts)
If you’re new around here, you’ll find we do photo posts every now and again. Mostly we make fun of signs, highlight impassable doors, talk about random junk, and find couches and shopping carts.
With Boxing Day sales still on (buy now!) we figured it would be a good time for another round of carts. You can find these things just about anywhere in Edmonton. Thanks to Brittney for most of these fine photos. (more…)
Carts and Couches
It certainly is a week of photo posts around here. Is it obvious that we’re cleaning off our phones and actually looking in all those folders of photos on our computers?
Here’s a post dedicated to two things I love to find in Edmonton; couches and shopping carts. (We’ve done couches before.)
It’s the best when you find them in really weird places. (more…)
Seinsess – 3rd on Whyte
There’s pretty much no way you don’t know what kind of business lies behind this sign.
Scrambled #yeg
Here are some odds and ends from around this fair city of ours. I like to call this scrambled #yeg, combining one of my favourite foods and Twitter’s Edmonton hashtag.
You can see other fun stuff we’ve found here.
This dentist takes his teeth very seriously.
(Anyone else know where this dental office is?)
When do all of our buses get DVD players, ETS?
If you’re walking down Whyte Avenue take a look down at your feet. That’s where you’ll spot these babies.
Sock on the LRT.
Umm, it’s a sock on the LRT.
And finally…
Edmonton Housing Report
What?
You thought I’d point you in the direction of real information on real estate in Edmonton? Not today, my friends.
Wigs
This is the bus shelter I keep my wigs in.
Until we get an Expo, and I have a Sunsphere to fill with boxes of wigs.
Ready for your close-up?
If you’re anything like me, you don’t tend to leave the house without a camera.
But, if you’re anything unlike me you have a fancy camera and are very much into professional tips and ways to take better photos.
Either way, how about some free tickets to the Edmonton Photographic Tradeshow? Yeah, that sounds nice doesn’t it? Now, I can’t just give you these two tickets to the Saturday show without making you jump through a hoop or two.
Lucky for you, my actual hoops are in the shop.
(Also lucky, that McBain Camera is cool enough to give us these tickets to give to you.)
So I’ll just ask you for a hilarious caption to the photo below. This is so arbitrary I’m going to go with the caption that makes me laugh most.
And…
Go!
What, Edmonton? What.
Sally found one of the weirdest things to be found, just out on the street. There are a lot of questions we could be asking about this.
The Fall
As the caption to today’s picture in the Headlines mentioned, I was at “The Fall” last night.
It was a mix of Guru Digital Art College graduation, tech networking, tweetup, and general goodbye to summer. Though, this great weather does mean we can still cling to the hope of summer.
Images of the evening after the jump. (more…)
Community League Day
As I’ve talked about, Saturday was Community League Day in Edmonton.
91 of the city’s 150+ community leagues held an event on Saturday, in a city-wide party of sorts. There were barbecues, potlucks, sports, games, music, arts, crafts, food, and general neighbourly goodness.
I went to the annual Fall Arts BBQ held by my league, Strathcona Centre. It just so happened our hall tenant, the Edmonton Weavers’ Guild was holding an open house. And our neighbour, King Edward School, was welcoming back 50 years of students.
Needless to say, it was a day for community!
- The art of the arts BBQ.
- More of the arts
- The bbq portion of the arts BBQ.
- Potluck.
- That’s determination.
Symphony Under the Sky
As we mentioned Friday, the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra (ESO) kicked off its 2010-2011 season with the annual “Symphony Under the Sky,” at Hawrelak Park over the long weekend.
It’s a great way to put your feelers out for the ESO, since it’s in such a relaxed environment. (Check our Friday preview of the season for other “relaxed” options for the new symphony-goer.)
We were happy to be invited back to the Symphony Under the Sky to blog about it. Here’s some of what we saw: (more…)
Smoke ‘em if you got ‘em
We might as well rock out to some smoke-related tunes when we’re not outside in the haze.
Our smoky playlist includes:
This Fire – Franz Ferdinand
Smoke on the Water – Deep Purple (live)
Smoke baby – Hawksley Workman
Purple Haze – Jimi Hendrix
Dust in the Wind – Kansas
Smokin’ – Boston
Ring of Fire – Johnny Cash
Smoke gets in your eyes – The Platters
Marijuana – Reverend Horton Heat (Hey, there are a lot of “smoke” and 420 jokes flying.)
Cinder and Smoke – Iron & Wine (via hi54lofi)
B.C. is on Fire – The Pack A.D. (So obvious I didn’t think of it for hours.)
Burning down the house – Talking Heads (though I didn’t link to their version)
We didn’t start the fire – Billy Joel (Clearly we’re blaming B.C for this one.)
Smoke ‘em if you got ‘em – Fun Lovin’ Criminals
The Motor City is Burnin’ – John Lee Hooker (I linked to MC5′s version.)
I Smell Smoke – Johnny Winter
I went all bluesy at the end there.
More today:
Disco Inferno – The Trammps (Burn, baby, burn)
That made me think of The Roof is on Fire by The Bloodhound Gang (NSFW)
Paris is Burning – Ladyhawke, Peaches remix (There’s also the St. Vincent song called Paris is Burning.)
Ashes to Ashes – David Bowie
Smoke Rings – Django Reinhardt

Here’s one way to track the smoke: It’s a smoke radar.
And on the health side of things, you can always keep track of air quality through Alberta Health Services.
Hail, hail
Yowza.
Thanks to Scott for the hail shots. What a storm tonight!
Remember that you can follow storms as they move around the city, by following tweets. Search #yegstorm or #yegwx. Following those hashtags will also get you a great selection of storm shots. Lots of lightning pics out there after this storm.
Our home base was pounded by rain, shaken by thunder, lit up by lightning, hit with hail, but we stayed fairly flood free and the power remained on. Sounds like other parts of Old Strathcona (and Edmonton, in general) were drenched a little more, and had power knocked out. Stay safe, Edmonton!
A real taste of Edmonton
As I’ve been mentioning again and again, this weekend was my first trip down to Hawrelak Park for the Heritage Festival.
A trip worth taking.
Since I didn’t want to crack the ETS code of when the shuttles left and how frequently they were leaving I decided to bike down to Hawrelak. (more…)
A Taste of Lunch
Yes, we finally made our way down to Churchill Square for the
2010 version of A Taste of Edmonton.
Thanks to Mari and Ryan for recommendations.
The pupusa from El Rancho and dry spicy chicken from Lingnan were great.
Sally went for the pineapple sunset chicken from Blue Willow, and calabrese potatoes with aioli from Zuccharo Cappuccino Bar. Both of those were also good choices.
We got out of there just about noon, so it was getting really busy with the downtown working crowd making their way to the square for lunch.
Our lunch for two was about $20 (with drinks). Thanks, Taste of Edmonton!
(Hover your mouse over the photos to find out which food is which.)
seinfeil – tossed out
If you’re looking to start a restaurant named Flavours, I know an alley where you can get a sign for free.
Take this, it’s free
If you want a free hat. (That free hat, over there, to the right.) Then you should toss us a photo from the Edmonton International Jazz Festival.
I’ll accept any of your jazzy photos though, since this is all about jazz appreciation.
Slide it into our Flickr group (which sounds just a little dirty) and that hat is yours.
Then we just have to figure out how to get the hat onto your head.
A smattering of Canada Day
Here’s a few things we got up to on Canada’s birthday.
FIREWORKS!

Did you find a nice spot in the river valley to watch the fireworks? Maybe you saw them down in Mill Woods?
Watching dogs run and jump through an obstacle course as part of the Canada Day celebrations at the Alberta Legislature.
Sometimes they slipped and flipped off course. But in a cute way.
And, of course, what’s a holiday without reduced transit service to pack the trains and buses?
Jazz hat (or More free Edmonton stuff)
Hey gang, remember when we went on and on about our first year and I mentioned how we had neglected our Flickr pool?
Well it’s time to make that right.
We’d like to start filling our pool with pictures. I’ll do my best to upload photos on my end, and if you’ve got photos of Edmonton stuff you’d like to add please do. I’d love to feature your photos of the city, events and people in our daily Headlines.
So…to encourage some photos, how about I offer you a prize?
How about, for the low, low price of a photo you can have a fantastic Edmonton International Jazz Festival hat? Sounds like a deal to me.
Upload a photo of you at the jazz festival or from any of the jazz fest events or shows to our Flickr pool and I’ll throw your name into the hat (literally) for a chance at the hat.
Thanks to Eri for the hat.
Seinsess: Queen Donair
(Just like seinfail is signs that fail, seinsess will be signs that rock.)
See, it’s not all making fun of spelling errors, unintentional humour and disastrous design around here. (Well, most of the time it is. But come on, it’s soooo easy.)
No, sometimes a sign is just right. And the neon chef, cutting donair meat, is gold. Pure gold.
In fact, it’s so good, you have to watch video of it in action. (above)
We found it!
So, a few months back we had an odd photo come in. I am happy to report we have tracked down the main subject of that photo.
Its new home appears to be the Oil City Roadhouse.
Of course, without DNA testing we can’t be sure this is the exact same giant bird. But I’m pretty confident…
