White Out

You may have noticed posters around Edmonton with people from local news, media, sports, and the Mayor all wearing white. This is part of a campaign to “White Out Domestic Violence.” It’s a partnership between the Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters and Edmonton City Centre mall.

Through the month of June the mall has been making counselors available (including this afternoon), and you can drop off clothing for women’s shelters. Thursday night, however, is likely the biggest night of the month.

Thursday is “White Night,” on the pedway bridge that crosses over 101 Street. White Night will include a cocktail party and fashion show. (more…)

Meet the Press’d

edmonton, press'd, sandwich, restaurant, downtown

So, I was wandering around downtown Edmonton’s mall district the other day (which is just City Centre Mall) and came upon a new sandwich place in the old Cargo & James spot.

Being an enjoyer of a good sandwich, I stopped in to see what Press’d had to offer. My first question, after ordering their take on the club with a potato soup, was whether this was a chain. One of the owners informed me this was an Edmonton deal. Good for them.

You can see all kinds of bread stacked high in the corner, by the cash. It appears quite a bit of food is prepared on the fly too, since it took a few minutes for my sandwich and soup.

I opted for a half-size because I wanted to pair it with a cup of soup (full-size sandwiches and bowls of soup are also options). That was a good call since the sandwich was piled high with turkey meat. I think it was just your standard lunchmeat, and the bacon was really thinly sliced, leading me to believe it was that microwavable kind. The soup was pretty good though, and they’ve got a handful of regular choices. The sandwich iteself is BIG. Did I mention that? I feel like I should mention that.

I would tell them to lose the bread cup next time I get a sandwich with my soup. Too much bread.

Press’d is probably going to be a decent choice for you downtown lunchers. It’s not deep-fried, and that’s always a step in the right direction.

Plus, they have rules on how to order, Soup Nazi style, which can only add to the experience. I wonder if they’ll deny sandwiches to those who break form…

Check out Press’d and let me know what you think. It’s in City Centre West.

Crushed it!

Edmonton Crush Auditions PosterMaybe it’s just because I came of age in the time of Tiffany, but man oh MAN, I do love entertainment in a food court. It doesn’t matter what it is, if you want to guarantee yourself an audience, just take your act to a raised platform in a mall, and you’ll get butts in the seats.

That’s my personal guarantee to you; 60% of the time, it works every time.

But that’s not to take anything away from this year’s newly announced squad of Crush dancers; I’m sure the ratio of ‘annoyed people trying to eat their Taco Bell in peace’ to ‘genuinely captivated audience’ was at an all time high. After all, who’s going to complain about a bevvy of beautiful ladies dancing up a storm next to a buffet of delicious fast food? Exactly nobody, that’s who.

Which brings me to the point in this post where I have to break Samsonow’s heart; you missed tryouts this year, buddy. Your dream of dancing before a cheering crowd is going to have to get put on ice for another year.

Or at least, dancing in front of a cheering crowd at a lacrosse game.

You can get a peek at this year’s lineup of ladies (that sounds way creepier than I meant it to) at the Crush website here, or you can just stick with watching the creepy perv video I took on my cellphone in the City Centre mall food court, posted above.

Churchill Square, on a sunny Sunday

Previous to this latest taste of winter, I enjoyed some of our more spring-like weather and wandered around Sir Winston Churchill Square.

I feel like if I don’t force myself to spend some time in the most obvious of Edmonton spaces I’ll end up running between big box centres and forgetting that there’s some pretty neat stuff here.

First thing I did was take a visual spin around the square. (more…)

Scrambled #yeg

This is the second in a burgeoning series of Edmonton photos. Basically, I see stuff that’s weird, hilarious, though-provoking, or just plain Edmonton and it appears here every now and again.

There never seems to be a shortage of odd things.

That’s a nice basket of rocks you’ve got there.

The next one was kind of funny at first. Then we found a second cough syrup bottle at Clareview Station and it wasn’t as funny.

Spotted on the Clareview LRT grounds.

I’ve had this one for a while. This mask was found at the University. Surely that means it has something to do with education of some sort. Right?

In case of emergency, find this mask at the U of A.

Remember when this guy (and his pal) were on the main level of the City Centre mall? Now they’ve been relegated to the back corner of the smaller food court. Sorry buddy.

It ain't what it used to be, because they put you in the basement.

I think, by this point, our love-hate relationship with Commerce Place and its Jasper Avenue doors is documented. That they have but one door, of four, operational on the city’s main downtown street is funny, but not “ha-ha” funny. Oh, Commerce Place…

Two doors broken, one door saw-horsed. You're next, remaining door.
