Vote it up

Just days before the federal election, we’ve got a few other places you can make your voice heard.

SEE Magazine’s Best of Edmonton is done tomorrow at midnight, so you don’t have much time left to choose the best of everything about Edmonton.

They’ve even got a blog category this year, which means they’ve covered just about everything. (We’re honoured to be nominated along with such fine gentlemen bloggers asĀ Dave, David, Ken and Mack.)

We want you to vote with your heart, but if you’re looking for write-in candidates we have a few to recommend:

Vote for Wunderbar for best beer and best bar (they have so many beers, and so much local brew!)

Vote for Luzzara for best coffeehouse

Vote “Chad and Colin from CJSR’s Makin’ Whoopee” as best radio personality (because they are awesomesauce)

Also vote:

CJSR as best station because they play more Edmonton music than anyone (CKUA is also good times)

*****

Vue Weekly’s Golden Fork Awards are happening right now too. So you can head over there to let the rest of us know the best places to eat.

*****

A friend of the edmontonian, A.O.K., is trying to win a music video. So, vote for Omar.

*****

You can also nominate people under the age of 40 you think are pretty cool, or doing pretty cool stuff in Edmonton, at Avenue’s Top 40 Under 40.

*****

After all of that, also remember to vote in the federal election on Monday, May 2.

March Lamb Headlines

I guess we should be happy that March decided to come in and go out like a lamb. I still don’t trust Mother Nature thought…

The Katz Group, and Oilers, are trying to jack up support for a new downtown arena with videos played in Rexall Place. Remember when the Katz Group brought that video with Morgan Freeman narration to City Council? They sure love videos. I’m not sure about that giant yellow font though.

I wonder if anyone will create a response video…

Speaking of the arena…we hear more from City administration on how to make it happen what documentation and information will be going to city councillors next week. You know, April 6, when the mayor says make a decision, regardless of whether questions are answered or we have a clear idea of how to pay for Katz’s new arena.

Oh, and here’s two really rich guys talking about hockey.

Alright, enough of that arena for today. (more…)

February 15 Edmonton Headlines

A balloon? You think a balloon one day a year will make up for you being a jerk? Or, at least something like that is how I picture this little guy getting left behind.

Hey, just because Valentine’s Day is over doesn’t mean we don’t love you, Edmonton. We’ll try to keep showing it.

On a more serious February 14 note, it’s a day to march and remember murdered and missing women.

A dangerous offender hearing is on to decide whether a man who attacked Edmonton bus driver Tom Bregg should be sent to prison without a release date.

Clear that ice on your sidewalk. You can avoid a bylaw ticket if you at least sand the crap out of all that ice.

An Edmonton police officer had her house burned down, and will likely end up testifying as a victim of crime instead of just an investigating officer.

99 Street and Scona Road is going to be one of the largest construction closures of 2011. So, you probably want to avoid that, starting in May.

Let’s see what else is going on… (more…)

A new way to follow the election

Hey, Edmontonians, I’m happy to announce that EdmontonPolitics.com is live and rocking the Internet.

I guess I should tell you what the heck EdmontonPolitics.com is so you have an idea of why I’m excited.Edmonton Politics, logo

It’s a municipal and school board election year so I started thinking about doing something big for election night. Then I saw what a team of bloggers was up to down in Calgary with their election. I mentioned the possibilities of Edmonton’s online newsies joining forces to Dave(berta) and, next thing you know, we’ve got a website that will cover the 2010 election.

Talking with Dave Cournoyer and other bloggers, and online types, the energy around the conversation really got me excited. It felt like this was something waiting to be done. And now we’re doing it.

I also like talking about it here, because it makes me think of a new series from B.C’s The Tyee, where they’re highlighting stories from the hyper-local Vancouver Observer. It’s interesting to see how online publications feel fine mentioning others, while I think you’ll be waiting some time before the Sun tells you to check out stories in the Journal.

Anyway, I hope to see EdmontonPolitics.com (or EP.com) be an online source of information, stories, opinions, and fun related to the October elections. While they don’t know it yet, I’m also going to try and recruit a bunch of people I know to write and document the election for us, regardless of them being regular bloggers.

We’re also hoping to break down barriers to political coverage. I know I still struggle with writing information in a way that’s accessible to people not versed in the topic at hand. It’s a problem a lot of reporters have.

So, hopefully we make it easier to know what the hell people are talking about with a glossary of acronyms, buzzwords, and people that will be mentioned in the election. And we’ll always be open to questions because I bet some people don’t vote, because they haven’t studied government since school, and just don’t feel like they know anything. EdmontonPolitics.com aims to include everyone in the discussion and get them voting.

Let me know what you’d like to have explained, or covered, here in the comments or over at EP.com.
