Fringe Events

Alright, so there’s no getting around the big event happening right now in Edmonton. The 30th Edmonton International Fringe Festival; Fringeopolis is on this weekend and until August 21. Almost all of the 180 plays will be happening in the Old Strathcona neighbourhood, but watch for venues in other parts of the city, like the Edmonton Public Library, downtown, and 118 Avenue.

We’re posting videos for Fringe plays, so keep your eyes on our “From the Web” category.

Now, that is not the only thing happening in Edmonton. A couple of smaller festival/street party items this weekend:

- Art in the Alley – art, music, an outdoor movie, and more, all happening in the Alley of Light. That’s the backlane that runs from Beaver Hills House Park, past the Sobeys, across 104 Street, over to the U of A’s downtown campus.

- Eastwoodfest – Back for another summer, this celebrates all things Eastwood (118 Avenue, betweem 85 and 87 Street)

- There’s a tea party at the U of A’s environmental students group naturalized site, which was top community garden in the Front Yards in Bloom contest.

In sports…the Edmonton Capitals are back home, hosting the Yuma Scorpions this weekend…FC Edmonton is home to the Fort Lauderdale Strikers…the Oil City Derby Girls’ rookies are taking on the Yukon Roller Girls…northwest of Edmonton, the St. Albert Heavenly Rollers take on the Cold Lake Lakeland Lady Killers (such a good name), on the 76th anniversary of roller derby…this weekend is also the kick off to the Prairie Football Conference season, with the Edmonton Wildcats home to the Calgary Colts, at Clarke Park (beside Commonwealth Stadium)…

In Friday music…it actually kicks serious butt…The Edmonton Show is back for a VIth run (that would be 6th), with Ann Vriend and Liam Trimble leading the way…Whiskeyface kicks off their tour at Brixx with The Sorels…Michael Rault and Sans AIDS are at The ARTery…Romi Mayes is releasing a CD tonight at the Haven Social Club…Carrie Day is at The Carrot (don’t forget about The Carrot!)…All Time Low is at the Edmonton Events Centre…

Saturday…The AwesomeHots get the day going with a Hair of the Dog afternoon show at the Black Dog…Paperplanes and Dragonboats release an EP, with The Paronomasiac, at The ARTery…

You'll be screaming with excitement over The Room.

All weekend…the Edmonton Rock Music Festival, a collaboration of The Rock and Roll Society of Edmonton and K-97, takes over Hawrelak Park. There will be plenty of, uh, rock.

You can always catch a movie in the cool confines of a theatre. And The Room is at Metro Cinema tonight at 11:20pm. If you haven’t seen The Room yet, YOU NEED TO SEE The Room. (Metro Cinema is now in the Garneau Theatre.)

You can hug your way to donated peanut butter, at West Edmonton Mall.

Oh, and if you’re using the LRT this weekend, remember that the train will not stop at Coliseum station because of work on the station platform.

Thursday Night Music (again)

It appears that Thursday night is setting itself up as a premiere music night in Edmonton.

Tonight, for example, you can choose from a local folk-popster on a great Edmonton label, a big Canadian name hitting the city, an eclectic prairie band swinging through, and some world beats at a fantastic venue. Not too shabby. (And for any music I’ve missed check out YEG Live.)

Now then…Doug Hoyer is at Leva Cappucino Bar, as part of the Old Ugly concert series. He’s got a new recording coming out soon, so maybe he’ll break out a song you haven’t heard before. Or maybe you haven’t yet had the fortune to see Mr. Hoyer so it will all be new to you. Oh the exciting options!

The Winspear Presents series has Salif Keita tonight at the Winspear. The long-time afro-pop musician is going to transport our humble Winspear to west Africa via song. (We’re giving away tickets to Friday’s Winspear Presents performance.)

I was alerted, through a news release-ish e-mail, that Winnipeg’s Flying Fox & The Hunter Gatherers are in Edmonton with their out there orchestral pop-folk. Prepare for that at The Nest (at NAIT).

And Canadian pop-rockers Mother Mother are at the Edmonton Events Centre tonight.

*****

If you’re not up for live music tonight, you can always head over to Metro Cinema for the Turkey Shoot. It’s a live version of Mystery Science Theatre 3000, with tonight’s classic film being the 80s cold war action flick Red Dawn.

Hot stuff (to do)

This nearly ended up being the hot dog report.

This nearly ended up being the hot dog report.

I don’t think it’s out of line to say this shiznit is bananas. Are you kidding me it’s going to be sunny and 26 degrees? Yowza!

With that kind of heat the Mill Creek Pool will be open about the latest its ever been open.

We’ve already talked about the Community League membership kick-off happening Saturday.

Speaking of free hot dogs…the Bonnie Doon Community League is dishing them out to celebrate their new playground…and the St. Albert Steel have them before the AJHL season kicks off tonight. Which reminds me, the AJHL season kicks off tonight.

Hot dogs aside, if you like improv (and you do) you may want to check out Die-Nasty’s 50-hour marathon at the Varscona Theatre. There are prime-time, non-prime-time and full weekend passes available.

The Eskimos host the Stampeders in a rematch of the Labour Day Classic (drubbing).

Your elderly aunt’s favourite artist is playing the Shaw Conference Centre.

Meanwhile, Keane plays Somewhere Only We Know.

The Odds play River Cree’s Live lounge. Huh.

The Alberta Provincial Racewalk Championship is tomorrow in Hawrelak Park. Seriously.

That should give you a starting point. Have a good weekend!

Go Weekend, it’s your birthday, go Weekend

Bocce and beer could be a good weekend mix.

Bocce and beer could be a good weekend mix.

It’s the weekend, baby. That means it’s time for fun, without the pressure of waking up early and acting all professional at a job. Thank you Saturday and Sunday, thank you.

We’ve already talked about the big Pin-Up Girl party happening tonight (and hinted at the Tattoo festival in that same story) but that’s not all that’s happening in this happening city.

The tattoo and arts fest is at the Shaw. Which is right by the Edmonton Dragon Boat Festival, which has races in the river (obviously). They’re at Louise McKinney Park to be more specific.

The Fringe is going for new attendance records in its final weekend.

Blues Fest takes over Hawrelak Park.

Raising Spaces has an Eco Reno Demo Day, so you can learn about home renovations the green way.

You can pretend you know all about playing the ponies at the 80th running of the Canadian Derby at Northlands, Saturday.

Edmonton’s Chinatown and Little Italy combine forces for “East meets West.” Say “Hi” to Ted for us.

A great Winnipeg band, with a great name, Hot Live Guys plays New City Likwid Lounge with local greats Old Wives. See, I told you there was fun. The bill is rounded out with Regina rockers Hot Blood Bombers

Or you can get your Classic Rock on at the Century Casino with Chilliwack.

And on Monday, Mos Def rocks the house over at the Edmonton Event Centre.

Eagles of Death Metal #FAIL

Last night I went to see Eagles of Death Metal at the Edmonton Events Centre with our friend, traffic wunderkind Garrette McGowan. (Thanks again, sir). It was a very good show. And I was pretty excited to, for once, be able to provide my own concert video for you guys instead of pilfering someone else’s off of youtube.

And to that end, I sort of have video. Just no … music; only earsplitting noise (I’m pretty sure Jesse’s moustache was emitting some kind of high frequency wave to prevent people like me from bootlegging their concert).

But this isn’t a wash. Here’s my plan B: go to the EODM myspace and load one of the tracks. Then turn off the audio on the above youtube clip. ZOMG, IT’S LIKE YOU WERE THERE.

not only am i a brilliant audio engineer; i'm also quite the photographer.
