This was the scene Tuesday at 9pm. So bright!
While this column spins its way around the downtown arena quite a bit, municipalities do get the worst deal when it comes to taxes. Provincial governments, which have power over municipalities like Edmonton, should think about changing the tax rules to allow cities and towns to tax more than property.
Police want you to be on the lookout for an older Chevy Suburban after a shooting in south Mill Woods. The two guys shot are known to police and aren’t talking. No crime should go unpunished, and no crime is more important than another to the victims. But this kind of crime, a shooting that happened in public, is one that justifiably leaves people upset and scared.
We should hear more from the police chief today on new plans to take on violent crime, but the largest way to solve such problems lies outside of policing with social agencies, housing, mental health, and addictions treatment, community groups, and school and recreation resources.
Here’s a good example of a couple of guys who used sports to get university educations.
While there’s going to be a need to involve all kinds of other groups in keeping our city as safe as possible, police budgets are not going to get smaller in the near future.
Five years after a man was shot by Edmonton police the case is still in the courts in appeals and reviews.
Alright, that’s where we’re starting today, but next we’re heading to Whyte Avenue. (more…)

Weather aside, this looks to be a great weekend in Edmonton. Of course, a big part of that is made up by how much fun you have. So have some fun, would you.
Let’s start with some musical options.
Saturday is Record Store Day! You music lovers can snag some records (actual vinyl records) hear live bands, and more at shops around Edmonton. Let’s see if I can name them all…there’s Listen on 124 Street…Sound Connection, Permanent Records, and Blackbird Myoozik all on Whyte…Freecloud on 101 Street (by 107 Avenue)…and The Gramophone…did I miss any?
Then, on Sunday, it’s the Edmonton Music Collectors Show. So, you’ve got no shortage of vinyl this weekend.
Around bars, clubs, and venues… Tonight: You’ve got Carrie Day at the Fresh Start Cafe…Destroyer at the Starlite Room…The Sorels are releasing an album at The ARTery. The Sorels are good. Whitey Houston, The Vicious Cycles, and The Mitts are at the Pawn Shop…and DUZHEKNEW is at Wunderbar…
Saturday: You’ve got a great local show at Idylwylde Hall with Falklands, Ben Disaster & The Cosmonauts, The Group Sound, and The Dizzies…54-40 is at Festival Place…and Sound Factor is at bohemia, but I mostly included this for the photo…and Classified and Said the Whale will be at the Starlite Room. (Said the Whale was actually here for the Tokyo Police Club the next Monday.)
Sunday: Tommy Hunter’s farewell tour takes him to the Jubilee Auditorium.
Around the theatre scene… The Three Musketeers continues at the Citadel Theatre (MacLab theatre), while Rick: The Rick Hansen Story wraps its run this weekend (also at the Citadel’s Shoctor Theatre). Theatresports runs tonight, and every Friday night, at the Varscona Theatre.
National Volunteer Week ends in a great way here in Edmonton with a volunteer fair at West Edmonton Mall.
Saturday is the last home game of the year for the Edmonton Rush. There’s also double-header action with E-Ville Roller Derby down at the Edmonton Sports Dome.
While Edmonton’s official Earth Day celebrations are cancelled, the Beacon Heights Community League is picking up some of the slack with Living Green 101, a few small changes you can make to your lifestyle to green it up.
You can stick it to Mother Nature by heading over toe 124 Street for the Spring Gallery Walk.
Or hide from the snow and see a movie.

It’s a weekend of engagement, city shaping, and thought provocation here in Edmonton.
Thinkers will be at MacEwan’s city centre campus for CityCamp Edmonton, which is a day of talking about local government and community groups. Planners will be at the latest open house on the Alley of Light. And skeptics will be questioning everything at LogiCon 2011, put on by our local Skeptics.
If activism if more your things, and you want to dance, I suggest Dance Dance Revolution, a fundraiser for G20 defendants, at the ARTery.
It’s the last Oilers home game of the season tonight. Which means the merciful end is near, Oilers fans. Oh, and it’s the last time Paul Lorieau will sing the anthem at an Oilers game. Also at Rexall Place this weekend, the Edmonton Rush are home to the Colorado Mammoth.
Anyone interested in short fiction should be at the Stanley A. Milner Library tomorrow for Dzanc Day 2011. We’re the only Canadian site for this day of writing workshops. At the Milner branch on Sunday, youth spoken word workshops continue, for the Edmonton Poetry Festival 2011, with Cadence Weapon.
The quiet before the summer blockbusters is on at your nearest movie theatre.
In fashion…The Fashion Event continues through Saturday. Get some fashion! My Filosophy is hosting its Second Annual Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation Red Carpet Event, at Latitude 53. Surely there will be ladies of high-fasion at the Bossy Mama Annual Spring Brunch, this Sunday.
Around the concert halls…Harry Manx and David Lindley are at the Winspear for The Winspear Presents series of folk and world artists. The Edmonton Recital Society gala concert is at the Muttart Hall at Alberta College. How about a little Bach to get you ready for the Easter season?
There’s some burlesque at the Haven Social Club.
Matt Machete is at bohemia tomorrow night. This guy rocks. There’s a Fundraiser for Walk for the Cure at Wunderbar, with Brash Tax, Miek Headache, Nick Watt and more; which means good music, great beer, and a good cause. Old Ugly’s Liam Trimble has a new album out and he’s kicking it off Sunday at The Pourhouse.
Of course there are LRT delays. Gah!
I know a certain local website which is working on a TV show that is always looking for your videos…
And next week is National Volunteer Week. Thanks for all the volunteering you do, Edmonton!
Update: I totally forgot about the back alley burgers. Tonight. Behind Hundred. 9:30-ish.

The jokes all done, let’s get us some weekend.
Tonight you’ve got the 3rd annual Gala Guru, at the AGA. It’s the annual gala of Guru Digital Arts College, and a meeting of Edmonton’s digital heroes and cool cats. And me. The big news from Guru is the addition of illustrator Nat Jones, and the new course he’ll be teaching on illustrations, graphic novels and comic books.
On the music side of things tonight, you’ve got Canadian legend Bruce Cockburn, at the Winspear. He’s here as part of The Winspear Presents series which focuses on folk and world artists (the kind you’ll usually see at the summer Folk Fest.)
Actually tonight’s musical lineup just gets better from there (and we’re already talking about Bruce Cockburn)…The Whitsundays are at the Haven Social Club…The Secretaries are at New City…Tupelo Honey has a new album release at the Starlite…April Wine is at the Century Casino…and the B-52s are out at River Cree…
Saturday is a great day for music, with a big lineup for a good cause over at Original Joe’s Varsity. It’s Rhythm for Research and money raised from tickets and a silent auction will help in finding a cure for leukemia and lymphoma.
Also in Saturday music, Weird Canada has a sweet show at the Pawn Shop, presenting Peace, Brazilian Money, Sans AIDS, and Jessica Jalbert. Over at the Starlite it’s the Rural Alberta Advantage, with The Provincial Archive, and Hooded Fang. (If you didn’t snag tickets to this show you can catch The Provincial Archive’s Craig Schram earlier in the day at Rhythm for Research.) And, fresh off their hosting gig at the Edmonton Music Awards, rappers Kemo Treats are at bohemia.

Missing The Room will tear you apart.
If comedy is more your thing, you’ll want to head over to the Roxy Theatre Saturday night for Mostly Water Theatre’s latest guffaw extravaganza.
You can always catch a movie.
Speaking of movies…The movie event of the weekend is at Metro Cinema though. The Turkey Shoot is presenting the greatest film of our generation: The Room.
On Sunday, Metro Cinema begins screening movies in the Edmonton Jewish Film Festival.
The Edmonton Rush are home to the Colorado Mammoth Friday night.
Two new plays begin at the Citadel Theatre this Saturday. The Three Musketeers is in the MacLab theatre and Rick: The Rick Hansen Story is in the Shoctor.
And Sunday night kicks off a week of evening LRT delays. Enjoy! (Enjoy the weekend, not the LRT delays.)

This weekend in Edmonton will be punctuated by a federal election and Earth Hour.
While you may start seeing election signs popping up, if the Conservative minority is brought down by the opposition parties, you will get at least a one-hour reprieve from attack ads during Saturday’s Earth Hour. The City of Edmonton will get into the darkness of things with a power-saving party at Churchill Square.
It’s a big roller derby Saturday in Edmonton (fitting, since the federal election could get ugly). You’ve got the E-Ville Roller Derby in Xanaduel and the Oil City Derby Girls All Stars taking on All Stars from Saskatoon. E-Ville plays at the Hangar on Kingsway and Oil City is at the Grindhouse.
The big Edmonton music event this weekend is the 2011 Edmonton Music Awards, at Haven Social Club. It’s a two night affair, Sunday and Monday, with plenty of live performances from plenty of local musicians and bands.
Also in music…Tonight, Sonic Band of the Month, The Red Threat, is playing at the Pawn Shop…You can also saunter over to Metro Cinema for “Edmonton Tonight,” a live talk show of sorts…Tonight and tomorrow, the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra (fresh off announcing their 60th season performances) and messzo-soprano Anita Krause, and Da Camera Singers, present Durufle’s Requiem…Tomorrow, why not head over to Wunderbar for B.A. Johnson (and The Moby Dicks and The Mitts) at Wunderbar? Why not indeed.
Western Canada Fashion Week continues over on Whyte Fashion Avenue.
Maybe you want to check out a movie. Good idea. (I hear Hobo with a Shotgun comes out this weekend…)
The Edmonton Rush and Edmonton Oilers are both at Rexall Place this weekend.

We’ll kick things off for this holiday weekend with a look at some live music in Edmonton.
Tonight the Uptown Folk Club kicks off Winterfest 2011, which means a busy weekend for folkies…There’s the Rogers Media Battle of the Bands at NAIT. I fear N.N. may destroy The Nest with rock…The Joe (THE JOE!) is holding an all-ages show for his newest release, Float or Flail. He’s gonna have a lot of performing friends along for the evening (Speaking of all-ages, the Jubilee is hosting Art Music Play tonight.)…Cygnets is at the new New City…KeysNKrates at the Pawn Shop…The Haven Social Club is hosting another Friday The Sound of Edmonton…
When’s the last time you put on your skinny jeans and hung out at the Hydeaway? This Saturday Xplosionation is there, releasing their new EP, and they’ve been kind enough to give us a track for your listening pleasure. Says bassist Nathan Woodward: “This EP is the culmination of 4 years of jamming and writing from three guys who love to have fun and rock out. It is our second release, but our first set of professional, sellable music.” Doors at 7, tickets 8$, EP can be purchased on iTunes. Also, there’s even more Xplosionation over at @mikeatqazam‘s excellent blog, New-Music-Michael.com .
We are Xplosionation – Xplosionation
If that’s not enough for your Saturday, The James T Kirks and Manraygun should blow it up real good. Boogie Patrol’s at Blues on Whyte too.
Heart and Melissa Etheridge are also in Edmonton this weekend.
Rexall Place will be bouncing with sportiness, as the Oil Kings, Oilers, and Rush all play at home. In other sports, the Oil City Derby Girls are hosing a rookie smackdown of Alberta proportions.
WinterLight don’t stop until, well, until spring is just about here. This weekend you get a double-dose with the Silver Skate Festival in Hawrelak Park and Family Day fun in Churchill Square. You can also Skate, Rattle & Roll Saturday at City Hall. To coincide with the holiday weekend and the NHL’s Heritage Classic, between Calgary and Montreal, the Glenora Community League’s got Family Fun Day and outdoor hockey at 10426-136 Street, 2-7pm.
Until the 26th Fringe Theatre Adventures and Edmonton Opera present The Barber of Barrhead. It’s the Barber of Seville in Barrhead, Alberta.
I totally forget to mention this (but am now including it by way of some Internet magic), but the Edmonton Symphony is getting all Bugs Bunny with great music from Warner Brothers and Hanna Barbera that subtly made us all listen to the classics.
And, my favourite, the World’s Hottest Commercials are back at the Empire City Centre Monday-Thursday, with a couple of lunchtime 45-minute runs for the downtown work crowd. It’s also a fundraiser for the Edmonton International Film Festival.
Oh, and watch out for LRT disruptions. Why they schedule this stuff for long weekends is beyond me. Except when you consider my conspiracy theory that the Edmonton Transit Service is actually run by the city’s top car dealers.

We did not forget about events. We were just, uh, distracted thinking about which ones we’d most like to do this weekend.
Winter Light keeps the good (winter) times going with MELTDOWN! It’s a winter arts party at the Jubilee Auditorium.

Awww...
The World’s Longest Hockey Game goes this weekend, and it just so happens to be a fundraiser for the Cross Cancer Institute.
Tailz is having a Valentine’s pet wash for HART (Humane Animal Rescue Team). I bet Sally is already there, waiting for cute puppies to arrive.
You might be able to Skate, Rattle & Roll Saturday at City Hall. But if this warm weather continues, it doesn’t look promising.
You might want to bring your great, tech, ideas to Startup Weekend.
In sports news…the Edmonton Rush are home to the Washington Stealth tonight. Then the Edmonton Oilers are home Saturday to the Ottawa Senators and Sunday to the Anaheim Ducks.
In music news…a couple of bands that helped us out with music for our election show are going to blow up Wunderbar tonight. It’s Van Gohst’s album release and they’ve got help from N.N. (who safely made it back from Japan Music Week at the end of 2010) and The Blame Its.
There’s a crazy good show at the Myer Horowitz Theatre: The Provincial Archive, Wool on Wolves, and The Deep Dark Woods. Wow. Wow, wow, wow.
Over at The ARTery, tonight is Rockin’ Robin’s Rockin’ Sockhop, with Kaley Bird, Sidney York, and Beekeeper.
On The Rocks has something called Seven String Sunday, with Shane Philip and Jeff Morris this Sunday.
Our friends over at S.I.R.E.N.S. have a Bouquet of Blues for your Valentine’s weekend. It’s a great bluesy show with Bruce Conte, Amos Garrett, and Jimmy Guiboche and the Fender Benders.
Speaking of Valentine’s, the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra’s got Love Will Keep Us Together.
You could always go to the movies. Though, Gregg says you’re better off renting this month.

Looks like a pretty good weekend ahead, Edmonton.
The weather’s pretty much returning to normal, but it should still be great for Freezing Man and Winter Light’s Illuminations. Freezing Man is a day of electronic and alternative music, while Illuminations is all about turning Churchill Square into what winter is all about, with entertainment, skating, and free hot chocolate. And a snowball fight.
The Edmonton Rush host Calgary for their home opener at Rexall Place. Go Rush!
The Edmonton Oil Kings are also home this weekend.
In music…Gorgon Horde is at Wunderbar… There’s a wine tasting auction featuring the ESO…CKUA presents Leeroy Stagger…the Sonic Band of the Month is Feast or Famine, and they’re at the Pawn Shop…Jordan Norman has a CD release at the Haven, with Christian Hansen (and no Autistics)…Ann Vriend is at the museum…yes, the actual museum.
Global Game Jam Edmonton is going to be all about putting together a video game (or working on a game) this weekend.
Tonight is Hip Hop on the Wall, a fundraiser for Hip Hop in the Park.
This weekend is the 1st birthday of the new Art Gallery of Alberta. Happy Birthday, you crazy, beautiful building.
And, on Sunday, watch for LRT delays north of Churchill (again).

It’s that time of year, again, isn’t it? The time of year when you panic shop to make up for all the time you spent watching Holiday Specials and swilling eggnog with your friends. Your no good, riff-raff friends. GOOD GOD, IS THIS WHAT CHRISTMAS MEANS TO YOU?! WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH YOUR LIFE?! GROW UP!
Anyway, in an effort to take the edge off, Monsieur Samsonow and I have made lists of a few ideas we might like to receive (p.s., send us christmas presents).
5 Gifts Sally Would Want
1) A fitness class from Defining Eve (10920 88th Avenue)

Defining Eve is a somewhat lady-centric (but dudes go there too!) fitness and training studio in the Garneau area that offers group classes, personal training and nutritional counseling. I am currently a very happy customer of theirs, and would wholeheartedly recommend this to the fitness enthusiast on your list. Or, alternately, if you have somebody who talks a lot about exercises but is actually terrified of the gym (someone like, say, ME) this place is basically their dream come true. Helpful staff, a friendly clientele and a warm atmosphere make it nothing like the junior high Phys. Ed classes etched in your memory. (more…)

It’s too bad Rexall Place likely won’t be hosting an Edmonton Rush playoff game. At least last night’s home finale against Calgary felt pretty close.
The Rush came out flying, going up 2-0 on those Roughnecks from down south. Then the back-and-forth was on for the rest of the four quarters.

When the Rush are in your end, you best check the net for the ball.
Calgary jumped back into things, ending up with a 4-2 lead after a goal the Rush ‘tender didn’t even see. The Rush stormed right back, taking a 7-5 lead in the second quarter.
Halftime left us at 8-8.
The frenetic pace was back early in the third, as Edmonton was up 10-8.
A couple of tough goals got by Matt Disher to give Calgary back the lead.
Edmonton tried to hold on for the win, and the possibility of a home playoff game, but Calgary tied things up. And, if you ask the Rexall crowd, the referees cost the Rush a loose ball that sparked a breakaway shot that would have torn the roof off the arena had it clinched the game.
So, four quarters wasn’t enough to finish this one. Nope, Edmonton fans were getting some overtime, just in case they wouldn’t be seeing the Rush again this season.
Unfortunately, the Roughnecks brightened their playoff picture a little by taking the game 15-14. Of course, it had to be the NLL‘s leading scorer, Josh Sanderson, who put the Rush down with his third goal of the evening.
Sanderson was one of four players with three goals, as his teammate Dane Dobbie beat Disher three times, and Edmonton’s Brodie Merrill and Corey Small were also worthy of our hats.
There was to be no autograph session after the game (as we were broken-heartedly told a few times), since the Rush were quickly off to Washington, where they’ll face the Stealth in their last game of the season.
A win means the Rush still have a chance at hosting a playoff game, if others lose. While a loss in Washington means playoffs, but on the road. And it also means Calgary gets themselves a home playoff game, because Friday night’s win gave them the season series against Edmonton.
You see now why last night had that playoff energy.
That important playoff positioning is why we broke out the rare off-day post. I also had a heck of time live-tweeting the game along with other Edmonton fans watching the action.
If the lacrosse stars do align and the Rush get to play a post-season game here in Edmonton, it could be worth the trip to see some spring playoff action in Rexall. I don’t think we’ll be seeing that on a Rexall ice surface for a little while.
Bring on the playoffs!
(Editor’s note: Since we often tweet about stuff that we just happen to be up to we thought you should know we received passes to Friday night’s Rush game. We’re real sports reporters now.)

This is going to be a good one, Edmonton.

Just worry about the weekend. Don't look at Tuesday.
The weather is hot and sunny, Conan O’Brien is here, NHL playoffs are on TV, and the Edmonton Rush are home tonight (7pm) and trying to secure some Rexall Place playoff action for the spring.
I’m always a sucker to mention Winnipeg bands coming through town. Nathan is one such band that is worthy of your ears.
Buddy Guy, the dude who calls Eric Clapton in that cell phone commercial, is playing the Jubilee.
I’m grooving to some We Are Wolves as I tell you they’re playing the Pawn Shop. What did we do before YouTube?
Ghostkeeper is at Brixx. The Old Wives are at New City.
And there’s more!
You won’t believe all the good stuff ShareEdmonton has for you.
It’s time for the Edmonton Women’s Show. Which I predict will, predictably, have some soap opera star in attendance. Yup.
Saturday offers the rare treat of seeing inside the Edmonton Law Courts, cells, courtrooms, and more. Without a summons to appear.
The Winspear Centre will be pop-y with A Chorus of Hits.
And Edmonton celebrates Earth Day this Sunday, April 18. It’s not in Hawrelak this year, it’s at the City Centre Airport. Fort Edmonton Park. (I have no idea why I thought this was at City Centre Airport. This is my bad, not ShareEdmonton’s.)
I’m already tired.
p.s. If you didn’t see it already, Nikki “I Believe” Yanofsky is returning to the Edmonton International Jazz Festival this June.

(Yeah, I’m already sorry about my pun headline. Even though I reserve the right to use more Rush-related phrases.)
Ah, spring in Edmonton. The trees are thinking about coming back to life (though water is a crucial factor right now), windows open up, and the playoffs return to the City of Champions.
I’m not crazy, I really wrote that last part. Playoffs. In Edmonton.
No, more than a dozen NHL teams didn’t come down with food poisoning, throwing the Oilers back into the mix. I’m talking about the Edmonton Rush.
They play lacrosse.
And they could finish the season as the best team in the National Lacrosse League. They get to try to leapfrog to the top of the heap with a little Battle of Alberta action over at Rexall tonight.
The (usually good) Calgary Roughnecks are here to close out the Rush’s home-season. Edmonton will head to Washington for the final game of the season tomorrow. Wins in both mean they finish on top of the NLL West, and maybe the whole darn league.
That kind of makes tonight’s game against Calgary a big deal.
So, we’ll see you there wavin’ your banner all over the place.
Oh, and with a win in one of the weekend’s two games, the Edmonton Rush are hosting a playoff game in, this, their first taste of the post-season in a handful of NLL years.

Yes, Edmonton, we’ve made it through that short week. Well, shorter for some. If this was a 5-day week for you, you’ve really earned a weekend.
So…here you go.
I don’t know if you know this, but Edmonton has a good sports team playing right now. I know, the Oilers still grab a lot of newspaper ink, but let’s forget about drafting 1st or 2nd for a minute and focus on the Edmonton Rush. They could be the best team in their conference, maybe the entire National Lacrosse League, when the season ends. They’re home to the Colorado Mammoth tonight. Boo-ya.
Hey, some of our YegSwap music buddies are playing tonight. Lyra Brown is at a songwriter’s showcase over at The Hydeaway. The Joe is part of a big show happening at the Avenue Theatre.
Some new friends, The Party Martyrs, are playing DV8 Tavern over on 99 Street. They will punk you. Tonight.
Also tonight, Matthew Barber is at the Haven Social Club.
Sally’s already been over the Spring Fling. That’s happening Saturday.
Now…for the best part, I head over to ShareEdmonton and raid their events listings, because I am lazy. And not too proud to hide that.
It’s the Northlands Farm & Ranch Show. Which is not news to you if you’re connected to the farm and/or ranch scene. Northlands also has the Canadian National College Finals Rodeo. Yee-haw!
What about the Edmonton Mini World Cup. Maybe you’re into that?
Oh, and the Century Grill is turning 10-years-old. I bet they’ll celebrate with food.
Apr 09, 2010 | Categories: EVENTS | Tags: century grill, edmonton rush, EVENTS, farm & ranch, haven, jeff, lyra brown, mattew barber, party martyrs, rodeo, share edmonton, spring fling, the hydeaway, the joe | Comments Off

There's also some big-time roller derby action this weekend. It's Edmonton vs. Calgary, baby.
Whatever you do this weekend, Edmonton, if the weather pans out as predicted you’re going to want to get outside. Especially if you’ve been running from your car to various buildings for the last four months.
Mayhaps you’ll be swinging over to the Shaw Conference Centre for the Edmonton Collectible Toy and Comic Show?
This weekend also sees a movie we’ve been waiting for to open; Hot Tub Time Machine. We really, really like it already.
The Get Down and The Old Wives are going to blow the roof off The Pawn Shop tonight, for the Sonic Band of the Month show. Now THAT’S Edmonton rock. The Old Wives are the BOTM.
Let’s go see what ShareEdmonton has to say about this weekend:
The Home and Garden show is on. That’s timely.
Maybe you want to talk about what Canada will look like at 150 years old.
Moms can Shop the Block, Sunday.
The Rush and Oilers are also playing here in Edmonton this weekend.
And don’t forget that Saturday night, at 8:30, it’s Earth Hour. So turn off stuff that’s sucking precious power.
Enjoy the weekend, my little peahens.

Here's how the swap meet portion of #Yeg Swap will go down. The music and fun will just happen naturally.
If you didn’t know what I was going to open this week’s events listing with, you just haven’t been paying attention.
March 20 means #YegSwap over at The ARTery. 7pm. Until the fun ends.
We’ve got you bringing some cool stuff, that for some reason you just don’t want anymore (don’t tell me who did what on top of it). You’ll be trading that with other people in our super-efficient swap dome* and all the while you will be entertained by amazing Edmonton musicians Lyra Brown, The Mystery Ponies and The Joe.
And all for $2.
We’re basically paying you to come and have a great Saturday night.
One other thing worth mentioning, those musical acts are from three different genres. You don’t see a lot of that, outside of your iPod, so that could be worth the price of admission right there.
Alright, self-promotion aside, I’ll head over to ShareEdmonton and see if there’s anything else going on. But it probably won’t be as good as #Yeg Swap.
A neat event happening Saturday night (See, I’m not so biased I won’t mention other Saturday events.) is also a fundraiser. Out of Sight: A Sensory Experience is a “dining in the dark” meal, where a mask or sunglasses will limit your vision during the meal.
The Bounce is having a birthday party, their 5th.
Tonight (Friday) there’s an “Eeeeeeee…” inducing event at Best Buy Edmonton South, it’s a Twilight New Moon Launch Party.
It’s Randy Couture night at the Edmonton Rush game.
Here’s an interesting one from the Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues; Green Projects to Empower your Community. It comes with wine and cheese.
The Edmonton Boat & Sportsmen’s Show is a sign of spring, right?
There’s a rally for public services at the Alberta Legislature Saturday. After that, you should come to #YegSwap.
Naked on Jasper (it’s a cybercafe you pervs) is hosting the Busker’s Ball tonight. It’s got a great lineup of people you’ve probably seen at other venues and actually busking.
There’s some Postdata happening at Brixx Friday night.
The Pawn Shop has a great show Sunday, with Jay Malinowski of Bedouin Soundclash, Kinnie Starr and Michael Rault.
I mentioned the coming latin passion in my review of an Edmonton Symphony Orchestra show back here, but this weekend is “Musica Latina.” Which is sure to set your hips a-swaying.
Oh, and The Fashion Event is back, for your spring shopping needs, over at the Mayfield Inn & Suites.
And tickets are now on sale for St. Albert’s International Children’s Festival.
Whew!
p.s. #Yeg Swap is being put on by The League of Extraordinary Media, which is our new group of Edmonton super-hero bloggers and podcasters. In the battle between good and evil, choose local.
*There’s no swap dome. I only said that to increase your interest.

First: apparently, no one at the 2009 National Lacrosse League entry draft on Wednesday had a camera, because the only pictures I could find were on the NLL website, embedded in a flash player, of people who have nothing to do with the Rush. Thanks, INTERNETS. Since I couldn’t find a relevant picture (and I tried moderately hard, folks), I chose instead to google image search “lacrosse”, and of the choices that came up, this one (it was on page 3) was my favorite:
…because, despite its “lacrosse” tag, it clearly has nothing whatsoever to do with the sport. Although, may I just say that lacrosse would be even more awesome if we somehow incorporated this kind of weaponry. Food for thought; perhaps we’ll see “U.S. Army Attack Missile” as the first pick overall in next year’s draft (fingers crossed).
The Rush scored pretty well at Wednesday ‘s entry draft. They wheeled and dealed their way into the 9th pick overall, trading Rich Morgan to the Minnesota Swarm, and ultimately getting Corey Small from the university of Albany (the OTHER U of A, for those of you keeping track at home).
From the Rush’s press release:
The talented forward [Corey Small] finished third in scoring with the Great Danes, netting 31 goals in 10 games. Small also finished third in the Ontario Junior ‘A’ League scoring derby with 38 goals and 39 assists for 77 points in 21 regular-season games for the St. Catharine’s Athletics.
“Corey plays with a ton of heart and has a great knack for coming up big in clutch situations,” noted [GM & Head Coach Derek] Keenan.
The Rush already had 12th pick overall, which they used to get Ontario Junior League forward Scott Tinning of the Brampton Excelsiors.
Other picks were Dane Stevens, Brett Mydske, Geoff McNulty, Shane Lopatynski, and Craig Zeeh. A complete list of first round picks is available on Wikipedia.
The Rush open their home regular season on Saturday, January 23 against the Buffalo Bandits. Also, the Edmonton Sun goes more in depth on the draft here.

Get it? Because I’m talking about the Rush? Wanna get some Neil Peart all up in ya? Anyway, we’re all friends here, and as the old saying goes, if there’s one thing friends love, it’s slappin’ da bass (that one’s just for you, Samsonow). And if there’s another, it’s a lacrosse draft. Or something like that.
Yep, we’re all going to be on the edge of our internets today, as the National Lacrosse League (NLL) Entry draft gets underway. The event will be streaming on the NLL website, as the league’s 11 teams choose from the best up and coming lacrosse players out of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the Canadian junior lacrosse system (and if anyone knows anything about junior lacrosse in Canada, feel free to fill us in on how all that works).
The Rush have six picks on the way, their best being 12th overall, and the NLL Insider has a rundown of the top draft choices here; this year’s event is in Buffalo, and starts at 5 p.m.
Here’s the schedule of picks for the Rush:
Round 1 – (12 overall)
Round 2 – (14 overall)
Round 3 – (25 overall)
Round 4 – (42 overall)
Round 6 – (48 and 52 overall )
And while we’re talking schedules, the Rush have also released their sked for the upcoming season. Tickets available through Ticketmaster, or get more details on the Rush website (if you’re into lacrosse, seriously, look at the team’s ticket options because you can get season tickets in the Golds for like $400).

What the hell is going on over at the Rush? These guys must really mean business for the 2010 season, because I’ve never seen so much lacrosse excitement in my life – and I’ll have you know, I’m a bit of a lacrosse aficionado (…that means I don’t know anything about it, right?)! Lately it seems they’re ALWAYS hiring somebody, or trading somebody, or announcing something. This time it’s a trade; say bye bye to Dan Teat, ladies. He’s going to Philadelphia, home of cheesesteaks, the Fresh Prince of Bel-air, and lacrosse (apparently), in exchange for Derek Malawsky, formerly of the Portland Lumberjax.
And while we’re talking sports, since, let’s be honest, it doesn’t happen that often – the Capitals’ website is reminding anyone with
tickets to tomorrow’s game vs. the Tucson Toros that the start time has changed, because of a travel schedule conflict with the visiting team. The stadium will still be open at 2 p.m., but the game won’t actually start until 5 p.m. It should be a good time; I just got a facebook invite informing me that there’s also a breast cancer fundraiser going on, where the Caps try to set the world record for most pitches thrown before a game. Well, you just got an extra three hours to set the record in, boys. Make Momma proud!

We’re mere moments away from an Edmonton Rush news conference, where the team will officially welcome former Portland Lumberjax defenseman Brodie Merrill and present him with a Rush jersey. Suit up, Merrill!
They’re also going to announce the assistant coaches for the upcoming season.
Sadly, we will not be present, because as I mentioned here, we have jobs that keep us busy, all day long. But that doesn’t mean we’re not thinking about you, Edmonton Rush. That doesn’t mean we don’t love you.
Rush bosses say Merrill is “considered by many to be the best player in the NLL.” He was recently acquired in a dispersal draft, from the now-defunct Portland Lumberjax.
Merrill made headlines earlier this month, when the Professional Lacrosse Players’ Association tried and failed to earn him unrestricted free agent status, after the Portland Lumberjax folded.
I know absolutely nothing about either lacrosse or hockey, but I’m anointing Brodie Merrill the Ray Bourque of lacrosse.
That’s right, I said it.
