The evening will include a screening of the documentary “Strange Powers,” about Stephen Merritt and band The Magnetic Fields. The movie starts at 9:30. Popcorn will be available. (It’s a movie, after all.)
Then, Edmonton musicians (withsomeprominentandrecognizablenamesin there) will perform covers of Magnetic Fields songs. And maybe other songs. I guess they’ll all see how the night goes.
Tickets are $10, and available through The ARTery’s website and YEG Live. Now, THAT’S a Thursday night in Edmonton.
Why, yes, that is a turtle eating mashed potatoes.
The week is only beginning, so we can all use a few chuckles to get through this. (Even if the Easter Bunny is making this a short work week for us all.)
So, you might want to mosey on over to Wunderbar this evening (say about 8pm) for a night of laughter from some Edmonton funnymen funny men funny guys comedians.
Of course a Smurfs reference would have made sense for a post about a play named Gargamel. But since we’re talking about God, and sound design influenced and including Brian Wilson songs, well, I opted for a holier (song) title.
Gargamel is a play from Mostly Water Theatre’s Trent Wilkie (who also stars in the lead role) about a guy, Dave (David), who loses his girlfriend in a car crash, and suffers mighty amounts of injuries, both physical and mental. Dave’s sister, Betty (played by Joleen Ballendine), sees that he needs to work through the loss of his girlfriend, Anna (played by Ellen Chorley), especially since he’s taken to screaming about fighting God. Although, to be fair, some of the encouragement to take on the Almighty is coming from long-dead Metis leader Louis Riel (Mostly Water’s Matt Stanton). Riel too feels like the big guy upstairs led him astray and wants David to know he’s right to want a duel. (more…)
Everybody’s favourite band (to say) is playing the Avenue Theatre tonight. It’s Fucked Up.
More local, Saturday will see the first Joe Bird Award. It’s a bit of a celebration over at the Empress Ale House.
#YegHelp is this Saturday night. That’s a big fundraiser for the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation. There’s a fashion show too. Plus, I’ll link to most anything with a #Yeg in it.
As you can see below (I’m guessing you’re on our main page, if not, go there and look below this story) the film festival is about to blow our minds with movies.
Suspense! Romance? Comedy!
But Metro Cinema is taking things up a notch during the Edmonton International Film Festival by showing Local Filmmakers.
The cats over at HighWire Films (also behind the CJSR Fundrive videos) have Beartrap for your viewing pleasure this weekend.
This looks to be a bit dark, but funny too. They call it Silence of the Lambs meets the Odd Couple. Which is enough to make it worth checking out.
The movie has local talent, crew, and even boasts some great local (and Canadian) music from Colleen Brown, The Famines, The Joe and Rah Rah.
Metro Cinema is in Zeidler Hall in the Citadel Theatre, 9828 – 101A Ave. (Hey, I didn’t know until the first time I went, so I’m guessing other people don’t know where it is.)
