July 5 Edmonton Headlines

There is a fist joke here. But I'm taking the high road.

Good morning Edmonton. All caught up after the long weekend, are we?

Canada Post’s strike and lockout can be blamed for delaying at least one hearing at City Hall. Though, the councillors and staff who put the matter over should be thanked for doing so, since they probably could have gone ahead.

MacEwan’s got a neat summer program. They run a “get ready for post-secondary school” week for aboriginal students making the transition to college and university.

More bike lanes! (And paths. And connections.)

Edmonton’s Big Brothers, Big Sisters, and Boys & Girls Club are all the same organization now.

The U of A’s first chair of Islamic Studies has died while overseas.

An Edmonton school, and a Beaumont one, is off to England for some Shakespeare.

Triathletes heading down to Hawrelak Park this weekend might not be swimming in bird poop. Well, not as much bird poop.

For the public healthcare supporters (which is most of us, I presume) you can’t get a better example of private healthcare than a bunch of seniors being evicted.

The province’s top cancer doctor (top as in head the head of administration) is retiring after four decades in medicine.

Yeah, an oil spill would probably hurt support of an oil pipeline. Speaking of spills…Alberta’s got a nice big role in the ones that happened on federally-regulated lines

A new deal between the federal government and the provinces should bring more than $150-million to Alberta to build affordable housing.

While a couple of the Progressive Conservative leadership candidates (Alison Redford and Gary Mar) are stacking up the money, Doug Horner is showing off his Tory MLA supporters.

If you don’t want to get hit by lightning, stay out of Thorsby.

Long weekend…driving blitz…lots of tickets… You’d think that since it’s always the same story on long weekends police would just enforce the rules of the road in full-force all of the time. Instead of every couple of weekends.

There’s a shortlist for the team to build the new Royal Alberta Museum.

Edmonton’s got some serious tacos going on now.

April 15 Edmonton Headlines

- insert weather complaint here –

Road construction on Scona Road will be delayed until after the federal election (May 2) to allow voters to head over to a polling station at the Old Timer’s Cabin.

I like Councillor Ben Henderson’s gusto. The LRT extension to NAIT is moving ahead and he just doesn’t want to stop.

The Jasper Avenue building that currently houses Oil City Roadhouse has been sold.

Edmonton police are looking for any information that could help them find a man accused of beating a robbery victim into a coma.

Alberta Health Services has a new boss and he’s already throwing money at emergency rooms and wait times. I just want to know what his favourite cookie is.

Another doctor reports intimidation for speaking out about healthcare troubles. You let me know what number it has to get to before we call an inquiry…

Some questions are arising about a new treatment for MS. The Alberta government is still going to study the vein therapy.

Meet the new AG. Same as the old AG. Same in the sense that he also thinks our provincial government needs to get better and figuring out what it’s charging royalties for, how it collects them, and whether it’s an efficient system. He does think things are getting better though.

The Auditor General also wants Grant MacEwan University to sign a construction contract now and then.

If you’re ever at the sea of Alberta, be sure to stop in at Port Alberta.

Hey, energy company guy, you dropped this pool of oil!

And the Premier says this place is better off without him. I mean, better off after his work here is done.

Weekend

Let’s begin this look at the weekend with theatre, shall we?

Just a heads up, though, LRT service will be disrupted north of Churchill on Saturday and Sunday.

The Citadel Theatre’s got Hunchback on now. It’s a new imagining of the Victor Hugo novel, not the Disney movie, from the minds of Catalyst Theatre. Speaking of Catalyst…over at the actual theatre, until March 19, is “Shatter,” about the aftermath of the Halifax Explosion.

Also until March 19, MacEwan’s Theatre Arts and Theatre Production programs present “Company,” their final performance of the school year.

The Brian Webb Dance Company presents Toronto Dance Theatre’s Pteros Tactics this weekend.

The E-Ville Roller Derby and Northern Lights Theatre are teaming up for an exhibition match/fundraiser.

There are a few shows around town…Kieran’s Art Trading Post is at Bohemia tonight…tomorrow is the Edmonton’s coin show and sale…and It’s Mom, Pop & Tots Fair weekend.

It’s another great live music weekend in Edmonton…

The Edmonton Show IV goes at Avenue Theatre tonight. It’s got music, dance, arts, and more.

Also tonight…Mark Berbue is at the Pawn Shop, with Ayla Brook and Old Ugly’s Doug Hoyer. (Speaking of Old Ugly…Jessica Jalbert is at Wunderbar Saturday night)… The Accident Will releases a CD at DV8, with DeSousa Drive and Bad Acid…The ARTery’s got Prairie NightsHaven Social Club’s got a CD release from Christine Fellows, who will play with Shotgun Jimmie…and the Jimmy Swift Band is at the Starlite Room

Saturday afternoon, Hair of the Dog has Samara Von Rad, which is a rad name. Saturday night Weird Canada (Canada’s best music website) presents a show at The ARTery that will likely blow your mind.

Gregg’s got the lowdown on movies actually worth seeing.

The City Market begins its run of Saturdays at City Hall, as preparation for it usual summer selling on 104 Street.

Oh, and Sunday night, Lucky 13 is hosting Carlton himself, Alfonso Ribeiro.

Have a lovely weekend, Edmonton.

This, That, and Edmonton

Good morning, Edmonton. How’s the return to cold been for you?

Just because it isn’t snowing doesn’t mean your work is done. You’ve got make sure sidewalks at your home or business are ice-free. If you get a ticket, maybe just tell the City you’re dealing with a once-every-two-decade winter and will need a little longer.

The Mayor has launched his neighbourhood revitalization task force. The group has the rest of the year to look at how to keep our older, core neighbourhoods in the best shape possible and make them places people continually live in. The biggest challenge, after you look at the basics like streets and sidewalks, is going to be dealing with a public school board that is closing schools in the same communities.

Alright, enough about snow and streets… (more…)

Snowbound Events

Sure, that snow is flying and it’s supposed to get cold. But you follow the Long John Index and are prepared.

The music is IN the piano?

And, this being Edmonton and all, I know you’re ready to head out into winter and have some fun. This weekend you could go up to Alberta Avenue and kick off Edmonton’s Winter Light Festival with the Deep Freeze Byzantine Winter Festival. They’ve also got some indoor events when you need to warm up.

If you’re not all that concerned with warming up, how about you take your pants off and ride the LRT. Yeah, that’s right.

The Oil Kings are home to the Regina Pats on Saturday.

In music…MacEwan is showing off its musical student talent…95.7 The Sound (Edmonton’s newest radio station, and fast-becoming a favourite of mine) begins an Edmonton series at The Haven Social Club…The Haven’s got a good show Saturday too, with Daniel Moir, Trevor Tchir, and Greg Amundsen. BTW, Haven is now serving up Pharo’s pizza. Samantha and Emily Schultz play the Blue Chair Cafe (we saw Samantha last summer at SOS Fest, she’s really good on the guitar)…One Way State is at the Pawn Shop…and on Sunday, Jenie Thai brings a jazzier style to Blues on White.

Some Edmonton Events

There’s some good music happening in Edmonton this weekend.

CJSR’s FunDrive benefit show is tonight at The ARTery.

Todd Snider is at the Myer Horowitz. (Thanks to hi54lofi for the heads-up on this one.) Kat Danser is playing the Arden…you know you like swamp blues. Michelle Wright is bouncing around the capital region. Homefest is also this Sunday.

Lyve on Whyte gets Old Ugly Saturday night with Doug Hoyer and Mitchmatic. Oh, and Emily is going to the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.

Also happening this weekend…Farmfair International (kind of a precursor to the Canadians Finals Rodeo, or CFR), the Oilers host the Red Wings, politicos are trying to Reboot Alberta (3.0) at the Delta South, there’s an open house at MacEwan University, it’s a Handmade Mafia weekend, and the Edmonton Public Library (EPL) is holding a kick-ass book sale.

Thanks to Leanne for reminding us about the Edmonton Rocky Mountain Wine and Food Festival.

Don’t forget there are always new movies and November is Shop Local month.

Peace!

It’s the weekend so let your hair down

Oh, and I don't want to brag or anything, but you should probably put this little baby in your calendar right now. I'll see you there in 2 weeks.

Let your hair down? What?! Who event talks like that?

I’ll try and up my hipster-era lingo throughout the rest of this post.

You can haz events.

Actually there are a few cool things going down this weekend in the Y-E-G.

First things first, let’s dig into the ShareEdmonton goody bag and see what we pull out.

Ooh…an Oilers game. Do people still go to those? For fun?

ShareEdmonton’s got a lot of Edmonton Public Library events, and I keep seeing this one, about gaming for teens. It’s cool that the library isn’t just about books anymore, and kids have a place to go do something fun instead of joining a gang.

You don’t hve much time left to RSVP for the Open City Workshop, but it’s a neat idea bringing developers, city staff and other people together to talk about what kinds of government information should be open and available, and what could be done with it (like build an iPhone app, or write an in-depth news story).

MacEwan University is hosting an open house, Saturday. Just don’t ask them about the pool.

If you want to drive out to Elk Island National Park there’s a Star Party. Take in the night sky without all of the city’s light pollution.

Then, you’ve got Pre/Post, The Consonance and The Madhatters playing Saturday night at the Pawnshop.

A band you might have heard of is playing the Shaw Conference Centre Sunday.

Or perhaps you want to check out the Newfoundland Screech Comedy from the Rock Tour, at the Kingsway Ramada? Yeah, I thought you might.

Scrambled #yeg

Totally random and with nothing to do with this post (outside of name); I had scrambled eggs in my breakfast burrito this morning. It was delicious.

Now, here’s some weird stuff I’ve spotted around this fair city of ours. I like to call this scrambled #yeg to combine one of my favourite foods and Twitter’s Edmonton hashtag. Oh, and I’ve done this before.

I can only imagine the first day of school, and this is your first classroom.

There has to be upwards of $12 on that boat.

The lady is real-size, the door is not. What's up with that door?!

This is over in Old Strathcona's theatre district. I don't know why. But it's cool.

Insert pants joke here.

What a busy weekend you have

There will be martinis.

There will be martinis.

Ah, the weekend. Our brief taste of freedom each week. Let’s enjoy it, Edmonton.

How about you get your thoughts provoked over at the Global Visions Film Festival? I believe it’s Canada’s longest-running documentary film festival.

The first Saturday of the month means time for the Handmade Mafia to provide you with awesome goods.

The Yardbird Jazz Festival kicks off tonight. Sweet.

Over at the TransAlta Arts Barns, the Night of Artists takes over for the weekend.

The Barns close out the weekend with a Yogathon for Charity.

Perhaps you’re feeling a bit peckish. Well, you can head over to the Shaw Conference Centre for the Rocky Mountain Wine and Food Festival.

The Likwid Lounge is hosting a veritable smorgasbord of aweseome Saturday, with a fundraiser show for a new independent record label. The lineup includes The Joe, A.O.K., Zebra Pulse and Audio/Rocketry.

As mentioned in the headlines this morning, Farmfair International IS ON.

The Alberta Ballet kicks off its Edmonton season with Romeo and Juliet.

The Edmonton Classical Guitar Society has “Between Two Continents on Eight Guitars,” or G8.

Maybe you’d like to see what Grant MacEwan University has to offer. There’s an app for that.

You can always see what Edmonton’s ChangeCampers are doing to change things around here.

If you’re a fabulous lady 50 or older there’s the “Fabulous at 50 Experience and Martini Party” (as noted in the sign above).

Perhaps you want to get rocked gently, by Andy Kim at the Century Casino?

With Remembrance Day coming up the Cosmopolitan Music Society presents “Lest We Forget: A Musical Tribute” at the Winspear Centre.

Finally, Said the Whale plays Brixx tonight.

And while it’s not exactly a weekend event, in the new week you’ll be able to listen to/download the new podcast from The Unknown Studio, with guests me and Sally. I shower the Unknown Studio boys with love until they blindside us with their 60 Minutes-style questioning.
