Food-Filled Events

It's gonna be like this, times 100.

Today you can eat some BBQ and chat with local producers and farmers at Wild Earth Foods’ Open Air Market, 2-8pm. You can also get some street food at What the Truck?!, 4-8pm. I hope to see you at one, or both, of these.

I am going to eat so much today…

Sticking with food…Saturday is market day! There’s the City Market (downtown), Old Strathcona Farmers’ Market (Whyte Avenue area), and St. Albert Farmers’ Market. On Sunday it’s the Callingwood Farmers’ Market (southwest Edmonton).

More food!!

To the festivals! Opera Nuova’s Vocal Arts Festival wraps up this weekend. Alberta Dance Alliance’s feats Festival of Dance has begun! The Works is on, in Churchill Square and around downtown Edmonton. The Edmonton International Jazz Festival is also on now. Improvaganza is still making with the funny. June isn’t done yet, so Bike Month continues too.

Holy cow we have a lot of festivals!

Fans of the TV show Firefly (and the movie Serenity, I presume) are fundraising at Can’t Stop the Serenity.

Perhaps a movie is in order this weekend? I hear there are plenty of great sci-fi options.

For the family…the John Janzen Nature Centre is open again. I guess this could also be for nature-lovers. Saturday, you can head on down to Rundle Park for Paddlefest.

It’s a great music weekend in Edmonton. The Works is packing Churchill Square with fantastic acts like Doug Hoyer, The Fight, and The Joe. The Edmonton Jazz Festival is, of course, all about music, from homegrown talent like Krystle Dos Santos to International artists like Trombone Shorty (Troy Andrews). The Apresnos are at Haven Social Club tonight

(Totally forgot to try and embed an Apresnos song, so check them out completely here.)

Saturday’s Hair of the Dog (at The Black Dog) features Jessica Jalbert. Get on board with Jessica Jalbert now, Edmonton. Edmonton music blogger New Music Michael is having a birthday party with with One Way State, kickupafuss, and Honheehonhee, at New City.

Sunday, The Sadies and The Sheepdogs play the Pawn Shop.

It’s a good sports weekend in Edmonton too. The Edmonton Eskimos are home to the Calgary Stampeders in pre-season action. FC Edmonton hosts the Montreal Impact. The Edmonton Capitals are home to the Yuma Scoropians. And the Edmonton Energy have the Albany Legends in town. That’s a lot of guys giving 110% and leaving it all out on the floor/field/diamond.

This Week’s Events

Hey gang, as mentioned earlier today, we’re busy, busy, busy with the new TV show and will take just a little step back from the website this week. We’re still around, stuff will still get posted, but you might just have to occasionally leave a message at the tone.

So, in case I don’t get to it on a regular basis, here’s some exciting and fun stuff going down in Edmonton this week:

The Citadel Theatre has two plays on right now. The Three Musketeers (in the MacLab theatre) and Rick: The Rick Hansen Story (in the Shoctor Theatre). Also in theatre, Pervert is running at the Varscona Theatre.

The Mayor’s Celebration of the Arts is tonight.

Wednesday you can check out what some of Edmonton’s software smartypants are up to at DemoCamp 14, at the U of A…Ryan McMahon and the Company Damn, and Doug Hoyer, play the Haven Social Club…Big John Bates is at New City…And Wednesday is also Awareness to Down There-ness Day (for the Underwear Affair), so expect to see some underwear.

Thursday, Old Ugly’s Concert Series continues at Leva (CJSR is also a sponsor) with DoT (Phil Holtby) releasing his first album, Miss Teviak…and F&M play Accent European Lounge with Jenie Thai…

Friday…Weird Canada Presents: DUZHEKNEW + Cousins + Service:Fair + The Group Sounds, at Wunderbar…Latitude 53′s new exhibits – Noxious Sector’s “Of Brains and Magnets” and Jinzhe Cui’s “When Dreams Lighten the Reality” – begin their stay at the artspace…and check YEG Live for more concert listings.

The NHL playoffs begin this week, so expect some extra mid-week company at your local sportsbar. (Yes, Oilers fans, there is hockey beyond April. I know it’s getting hard to remember that.)

Donate to CKUA. The Alberta-wide radio network is in the middle of its spring fund drive, so keep Alberta radio Albertan (and indie, and eclectic).

Vote for CJSR’s Chad and Colin – hosts of the Tuesday morning show “Makin’ Whoopee” – as best local radio personality(ies) in SEE Magazine’s annual Best of Edmonton. Also vote for Wunderbar and Luzzara wherever you can because they’re great Whyte Avenue businesses that didn’t make the SEE cut.

What Big Plans You Have

It’s weekend o’clock, Edmonton!

This shall be a good weekend. As it is written so shall it come to pass.

Around the live music venues this weekend it’s going to be a good time. Tonight you’ve got audio audio/rocketry celebrating 5 years together with a 3rd album, and show at the Pawn Shop…90s brit-rockers rhodes are at Haven Social Club with Treelines, Warning to Avoid, and The Fight…over at the Wild Earth Bakery you can listen to Jenie Thai…The Old Wives and Kemo Treats are going to try and bust through the roof of New City (which would scare the hell out of everyone at Hudsons)…

Saturday begins with Doug Hoyer at the Black Dog for Hair of the DogSister Gray is at Expressionz Cafe…The AwesomeHots have a new album, and they’ll release that at Wunderbar…at The ARTery Saturday you can catch Daniel Moir, with Scenic Route to Alaska…And FOREIGNER IS HERE!

Sunday’s got a great show at the Haven Social Club, with Romi Mayes playing with the with Give ‘em Hell Boys, Jake Ian, and The Haymakers.

For music that’s not in a club or bar, Ben Vereen is “Steppin’ Out” with the ESO, in Robbins Pops shows tonight and Saturday.

In theatre…The Citadel Theatre’s got Hunchback, a Catalyst Theatre production of the Victor Hugo novel…and at the actual Catalyst Theatre “Shatter,” about the aftermath of the Halifax Explosion, wraps its run…Dog is over at the Roxy Theatre

While the headline of this post alludes to Little Red Riding Hood, that is in no way an endorsement of seeing the sexualized thriller in theatres about the same. Gregg can let you know what’s worth seeing.

On Sunday, Levar Burton will be here. Oh, he’s got a reason to be here. It’s the Edmonton Collectible Toy and Comic Show.

You can catch the playoff-bound Oil Kings and lottery selection-bound Oilers in Edmonton this weekend too.

A rollicking weekend

You’re in for one of those, Edmonton. And the weather is even

I guess we know which one of us will be watching movies for free.

supposed to be nice. So let’s all remember to take advantage of that.

The Edmonton International Film Festival is underway tonight. There’s an opening night movie and gala, then it’s a week+ of movies, movies, and more movies.

Speaking of movies…

The Old Strathcona Foundation is hosting A Taste of Old Strathcona, tonight at the Arts Barns. It will be food and a silent auction, all the with flair of Edmonton’s funnest neighbourhood.

Speaking of the Old Strathcona neighbourhood…Edmonton Chante is back for another year of the city’s best French music. The shows are free. Free I tells ya!

Speaking of music…Falklands is, of course, playing New City. It’s the first show of their national tour. We think they’re great.

The ARTery continues its fundraising Happy Hour Fridays. This month’s charity is Room to Read. Plus, there are rumours of a new nacho treat.

Danny Michel is playing the Arden Theatre. He’s also great. And he’s following up his show tonight with a songwriter’s session with U22.

Chopin 2010 begins this weekend. It’s months of music and events to celebrate the 200th birthday of Polish composer Fryderyk Chopin. (You probably recognize some of his work.)

Speaking of classical music (more…)

A weekend for community, and arts

Hi Everybody! Here’s some stuff I think you might be interested this weekend.

Community League Day is Saturday, September 18. My community, Strathonca Centre, will be holding its annual arts BBQ. It times out nicely, since our neighbour, King Edward School, will be celebrating 50 years the same afternoon. And the Edmonton Weavers’ Guild, a tenant of our community hall, is hosting an open house.

If you’re not in my neighbourhood, you’re probably in, or close to, one of the 89 other communities throwing a party Saturday. Get out there and find out who your neighbours are, what people are up to, and snag yourself some free food.

Sunday is the Terry Fox Run. It’s the 30th anniversary.

This weekend is also Alberta Arts Days. There are plenty of events happening, at plenty of places.

Alley Kat is launching their fall brew, Pumpkin Pi, with a party tonight.

You could always see a movie.

D.O.A. at New City tonight.

U22 is hosting an evening of young musicians at the Horizon Stage in Spruce Grove. Among the performers is one of our favourite locals, Lyra Brown. U22 is actually quite busy during Alberta Arts Days.

Rae Spoon is playing The ARTery tonight. Tonight is also a fundraising Friday happy hour. Tomorrow at The ARTery it’s the release of the latest issue of Notebook Magazine.

Visualeyez is back. That’s Latitude 53′s performance arts festival. This year’s theme is food.

Jailbait kicks off the Northern Light Theatre’s season. Oh, it’s theatre season.

There’s some roller derby action at Northlands.

How could we go without mentioning Western Canada Fashion Week? We couldn’t.

And…BIEBER!

Art imitating life (NSFW)

(Editor’s note: You’re likely to encounter the word “penis” in this item, so keep that in mind if you’re viewing from a work computer. Also, we were given tickets to the Blue Revue, so we could save our change for the peeps.)

By Little Miss Curious

If you read enough about sex, you start seeing sexy stuff everywhere.

DIY yourself porn. It’s never been easier.

With the advance of digital media, smartphones, and cheap electronics, recording your partner doing something naughty has never been simpler. The days of low-res Paris Hilton’s sex tapes need no longer apply.

I’ll admit, I’m no rookie to the production side, having camera equipment always lying round and some very curious partners. Not that I have a whole coffee table book to fill but…The most memorable so far was in the middle of some scary Mexican city, in some scary Mexican hotel that was next to a very scary looking Mexican gun shop.

My bf at the time and I ended up on Mariachi street and were kept awake by sombrero singers. The music was (ahem) so romantic that we decided to record the memories. Unfortunately though, my now ex-bf never deleted the pictures and threatened to release them last year when I was in the Middle East.

Let that be a lesson learned, check your partner’s equipment before you part ways.

On Wednesday, Vue Weekly hosted their first ever “Blue Revue” party to coincide with their annual sex issue. For those of you that missed it (and you did miss a great show) the Blue Revue revolved around amateur pornography, made by our fellow Edmontonians. Not to mention, Capital City Burlesque, BrontoScorpio and some vintage porn.

Edmonton, all I can say is you got talent my friend. (more…)

Sexy time

Hi, Edmonton. Didn’t see you there. Wait, come on in here for a minute.

Would you like a glass of wine? How about you sit down here, on the edge of our bed, and talk with us for a minute…

You have to go? Can we get your number?

edmonton, vue, blue revue

Yes, Edmonton is a sexy place, full of sexy people. And Vue Weekly knows all about the sexiness that is Edmonton. They do publish an annual sex issue.

But it seems that just wasn’t enough for those insatiable alt-weekly folk. They wanted more of you. And they’re going to get it.

Next Wednesday night. (more…)

Edmonton Events

Boring headline aside, this weekend has the potential to blow your mind.

beer, handbill, table, edmonton, phone

Sometimes all you need is a good beer, a place to be, and a phone. The phone is in case you need to find a better party.

East meets West is this weekend, which is where you get the best of Edmonton’s Chinatown and Little Italy. And this year kicks off with Karibuni Afrikafest (happening now!). Three days, three cultures, three times the fun.

Good thing I check ShareEdmonton for events. I’d have never heard about the Outdoor Nite Market otherwise. That’s tonight (Friday), on 107 Avenue, and it’s got a little of everything. The best item it has is a reason for people to be out on the street at night, which encourages good things.

This weekend, Hawrelak Park has the first-ever Open Sky Music Festival. It’s all about surf rock, island rock and reggae. The weather may not say summer, but that music sure does. (If the festival’s website isn’t working for you, there are details at ShareEdmonton’s event page.)

Telus Field will be hosting a music event Saturday too. Rock The River hits our city.

Saturday night I’ll likely be checking out Bohemia for the first time. N.N., Touch it and you will say ow, and The Mystery Ponies are playing.

Eamon McGrath is at New City. That’s Saturday too.

Lady Gaga is still here. If she’s still in Edmonton this weekend I’m going to start getting worried we won’t be able to get rid of her. And I’m going to borrow her wardrobe.

Since it looks like we might have already tapped out the good weather you can always head inside to see a movie.

FC Edmonton gets its final kicks at its warm-up season Saturday. The team is hosting Miami FC. I wonder if they’re playing for the right to have FC in their name? There can be only one!

The Eskimos are home to the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Shouldn’t we be going to the games this season, so as to not appear as bandwagon jumpers if they get good again?

Over at the River Cree Casino there’s also the All-In for Diabetes Poker Tournament. Buy-in is $250 and you can claim $100 for knocking out bounties, such as CTV’s Daryl McIntyre. If you bring a bag of clothing as a donation you can get extra chips too.

Hold onto your potatoes

We’re right into the heart of Edmonton summer now, jam-packed with festivals. This is our time to shine, our time to live it up.

This weekend’s choices are plentiful. (And I realized, after I started linking, that events from ShareEdmonton and YegLive.ca are integrated today. Just mixing it up.)

Tonight, tomorrow, and Sunday there’s the SOS Fest, all over Old Strathcona.

We think it’s going to be so much fun, so many bands and musicians in lots of venues, that we’ve set up a separate blog just for the SOS. We’ll post through the weekend (which is not something we ever do) over there and wrap it all up here, Monday. Let us know who we should check out, which venues we should experience, and show us where the most fun is happening. We’ll see you on the street.

Oh, and Sunday also sees Whyte Avenue shut down for its annual street sale, plus two stages of live music for the SOS Fest. (I told you it was the place to be this weekend.)

Still in the neighbourhood, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas is playing at the Walterdale.

In sports, there’s the World Cup final between Spain and the Netherlands, Sunday. Bars will be busy, I’m sure. The Capitals and Prospects are on the ball diamonds, and the Eskimos are home to the Montreal Alouettes.

The Edmonton International Street Performers Festival is back at Churchill Square.

Doors Open Edmonton and the Edmonton & Northern Alberta Historic Festival are going to take you into buildings you don’t normally get to explore, places sometimes unseen, and historic spots worth visiting. Including CKUA and Alley Kat brewery in Edmonton. Plus, there’s a walking tour of the Highlands neighbourhood.

That’s not to be confused with the Highland Gathering, at Fort Edmonton Park.

If you’re swinging by the Downtown Farmers’ Market you’re probably going to see the All Ford Classic Show.

Down in Hawrelak Park, the Freewill Shakespeare Festival continues with their runs of MacBeth and Much ado about nothing.

In music not related to the SOS Fest, OK GO is at the Starlite tonight. Raygun Cowboys play New City. And Streetheart, yes Streetheart, will be rocking the Century Casino.

The Art Gallery of Alberta is going late-night with another Refinery party. The Valley Zoo is also going for something with an after-hours feel, hosting ZooFest. The Bissell Centre is holding a Block Party of the Century too.

Transcend Coffee is putting their baristas to the test, Sunday, to see who deserves to compete in the Prairie Regional Baristas Championship. The latte foam will be flying.

If you’re heading toward Victoria Hill, just off 116 Street, Sunday, I hope you’re driving a soapbox racer.

And you can always see a movie.

Oh, the things you’ll do

I’m not messing around when I say there is a lot of stuff to do in Edmonton over the next three days.

There is A LOT of stuff to do in Edmonton over the next three days.

Tonight, I’m making it about music. And you could too.

I’ll be at the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra (9:30), taking in a “Late Night” performance. Tonight is Late Night Paris. After the performance there’s live jazz in the Winspear.

(There’s more Parisien Charm Sunday afternoon.)

The Late Night series is another way the ESO is trying to reach new audiences. They’ve got the Symphony Under the Sky in Hawrelak Park for the Labour Day weekend, matinees, pops, Broadway, kids’ shows, and the classics. A performance at 9:30 on a Friday night makes it feel like a real night on the town.

As the season winds down (it’s over in mid-June) I applaud the ESO for their versatile lineup and can’t wait for 2010-2011 to kick-off in the park.

If you don’t want to spend the evening at the Winspear Centre you can still make tonight about music.

We mentioned earlier that One Way State is playing Friday night with Maurice. Too Slim and the Taildraggers are still at Blues on Whyte too.

Our old pal Jerrold Dubyk is playing this weekend. He’s got a show tonight, at 6:30, at Victoria School. Then The Jerrold Dubyk Quartet takes to the Haven Social Club stage Saturday night with Althea Cunningham and Dawn in the City.

Dance!

Back to Friday music…You could see The Neil Young Trunk Show over at Metro Cinema. Or catch punk legends The Buzzcocks at New City. The U of A’s Convocation Hall has Classic Broadway via Opera Nuova.

And Disney’s Beauty and the Beast finishes its Edmonton run this weekend.

Now…what about the rest of this busy weekend?

Did somebody ask for a Dance-a-Thon? Good. Because Mile Zero Dance is doing just that, Saturday night. It starts at 7:30 and while it says it ends at 1:30 am, I hope it goes until the last dancer drops.

It could be a weekend of shopping for new things. You can swing by Make-It Edmonton! and buy some cool, handmade goods. If you quickly find yourself with buyer’s remorse you can get over to the Winspear and trade that stuff away at the Over the Top Swap, which also happens to be a spa for the day.

You can celebrate videogames with local podcast User Created Content. They’re throwing a 2nd birthday party Saturday. It starts at HiTech Gaming (15219 Stony Plain Road) and finishes at Union Hall (Argyll and 99 Street).

If you’re still in the gaming mood, Sunday sees the monthly GamePub over at Original Joe’s Varsity.

Edmonton’s own Ann Vriend is playing the Myer Horowitz Theatre Saturday night. She’s kind of a big deal.

We are in the midst of summer movie blockbuster season. I think Sally is trying to drag Gregg Beever to Sex and the City 2. I feel bad for him.

Our event-loving friends over at Share Edmonton have something to say about the next few days too. Share has also teamed up with YEG Live.ca to keep us all updated on live music!

They’ve got details on all the running around you could be doing at the Little Big Run and the Subway Coronation Triathalon. I wonder if everyone eats a giant sub after the race?

Saturday sees a Highlands Street Festival over on 112 Avenue.

And don’t forget the Edmonton Energy play at the Butterdome tonight, they’re hosting the Bellingham Slam.

Don’t tell me you can’t find something to do.

What a weekend

This is going to be a good one, Edmonton.

Just worry about the weekend. Don't look at Tuesday.

The weather is hot and sunny, Conan O’Brien is here, NHL playoffs are on TV, and the Edmonton Rush are home tonight (7pm) and trying to secure some Rexall Place playoff action for the spring.

I’m always a sucker to mention Winnipeg bands coming through town. Nathan is one such band that is worthy of your ears.

Buddy Guy, the dude who calls Eric Clapton in that cell phone commercial, is playing the Jubilee.

I’m grooving to some We Are Wolves as I tell you they’re playing the Pawn Shop. What did we do before YouTube?

Ghostkeeper is at Brixx. The Old Wives are at New City.

And there’s more!

You won’t believe all the good stuff ShareEdmonton has for you.

It’s time for the Edmonton Women’s Show. Which I predict will, predictably, have some soap opera star in attendance. Yup.

Saturday offers the rare treat of seeing inside the Edmonton Law Courts, cells, courtrooms, and more. Without a summons to appear.

The Winspear Centre will be pop-y with A Chorus of Hits.

And Edmonton celebrates Earth Day this Sunday, April 18. It’s not in Hawrelak this year, it’s at the City Centre Airport. Fort Edmonton Park. (I have no idea why I thought this was at City Centre Airport. This is my bad, not ShareEdmonton’s.)

I’m already tired.

p.s. If you didn’t see it already, Nikki “I Believe” Yanofsky is returning to the Edmonton International Jazz Festival this June.

…All Hail…Hale Hale!

IMG_2954x

Hale Hale (Cody McLauchlin, Evan Tardif, Scott Steele & Trevor Neary)

Okay, you guys, I know there’s a seventeen foot wall of snow outside right now, and all anybody’s thinking about is how the hell they’re going to get home from work without getting stuck in some nightmare bottleneck of traffic.  But let’s set aside the Winter Wonderland for a minute. I would like to challenge the conventional “go home and hide under your bed in a bathing suit pretending it’s still summer” mentality, and suggest that you put on your dancing Sorels and hit the town tonight. Because it’s going to be a very, very good night over at New City.

Local band Hale Hale is launching their spanky new EP this evening, and they are definitely worth braving walls of snow to see.  I first heard of them about a few months ago, when a couple of the members turned up at a friend’s house to play some music.  I only met them once or twice, but even just messing around, they were so good, and such nice guys to boot,  that I had no choice but to go home, dig a hole in my front yard, put my guitar in it, and light it on fire.  Now let us never speak of this again.

Anyway, I talked to the Hale Hale crew about their new record via the ‘lectronic mail yesterday.

halehaleDec4thSALLY: How did you guys get together?

HALE HALE: We’re not really sure how everything fell together. Everything just kind of did. A mish mash of previous projects and jam friends who eventually started playing together and it stuck.

SALLY:  Who would be your guys’ top 5 influences?

HALE HALE: All four members influences vary greatly. That’s one thing that keeps the music interesting. It was never “I love this band” , “I love that band too, let’s play together!”. Cody originally comes from indie roots, Trevor is a post-grunge 90′s kid, Scott grew up with NOFX, the misfits and a skateboard, and Evan, from classic rock, grindcore and black metal to dance music.

SALLY:  How has your reception been in the Edmonton music community? What’s your experience been like playing here?

HALE HALE: We’ve been received well, we think.  We’ve been told we have a fresh sound. As for playing in Edmonton, it is hard to get anywhere with the lack of venues, but we’re making do with what we got and staying positive for sure. Playing is playing, regardless of where it is, as long as we are getting our music out and growing together as a band.

SALLY: Can you give me a brief description of the EP? What do you hope people take away from it ?

HALE HALE: We just want people to put it on, have a good time, and shake their ass to it. F*ck we are deep.

And finally, if you dig Hale Hale but can’t make it out tonight, you can get a copy of the EP by emailing halehalemusic@gmail.com.

Get some weekend

Hello there, Edmonton.

Yes, it’s the weekend. You’ve earned a little rest and relaxation.

You know, there’s going to be some mighty fine football on television if you just want to watch that.

Oh, you’d like something a little more? How about this then…

The Royal Bison Craft Fair takes over your life Saturday and Sunday. And David Berry and Josh Holinaty will be selling chapter 1 of their serialized graphic novel too.

Don’t forget to get your pre-craft fair party on.

Oh, and if that’s not enough to keep you from handing over your Christmas present money to giant corporations (who are welcome to advertise here, a lot) there’s a fair trade fair as well.

If you’ve got some non-perishable foods just sitting around your house, how about dragging that stuff down to a Save-On Foods location Saturday and helping the ETS “Stuff-a-Bus,” for the Edmonton Food Bank. Money is good too.

You can always check out the Festival of Trees. That’s a good time.

The Hidden Cameras and Gentleman Reg are playing the Avenue Theatre, Friday.

There’s a “Save Alberta Hospital” concert Saturday, at the Edmonton Events Centre.

It’s Band of the Month time at the Pawn Shop. Thanks, Sonic!

And The Artery has a couple of cool shows. There’s blues tonight with Bombchan’s CD release and Kinnie Starr Saturday.

Bombchan is also playing the 2nd anniversary party of The Empress Ale House next Tuesday.

Plus, New City has You say party! We say die!, with Christian Hansen & The Autistics and Little Girls.

And ZZ Top is playing the Jube Saturday night to top off a weekend of great music.

Candy-fuelled events

Always trick or treat in groups.

Always trick or treat in groups.

It turns out there’s a lot more to do this weekend than asking strangers for candy. But I also endorse you dressing like a weirdo and asking random people for candy. I think you should go right up to their door and demand it.

Or do one of these things instead.

Outside of trick or treating there is a lot of Hallowe’en themed stuff going on in Edmonton.

There are also loads of concerts, with Metric, Puddle of Mudd, Marianas Trench, Dan Mangan, and Paper Lions all playing in the next few days.

On the topic of music, Homefest is this Sunday at the TransAlta Arts Barns. That’s a concert fundraiser for homelessness initiatives.

If you like covers, and who doesn’t, then you’ve got some options Saturday. The Pawn Shop has “Tribute Central” with bands and artists playing lots of favouites. The Starlite Room has a similar event, but with Hallowe’en dress-up.

New City has plenty, and I mean plenty, of Hallowe’en antics. Tonight there’s a big rock show with The Get Down, Let’s Dance, The Mitts, No Problem and Geister…while in other parts of New City you’ll find Capital City Burlesque at the I Love 80s danceparty. Tomorrow night there’s The Creepshow. That’s a lot of rock and a lot of ‘ween.

Over at the Varscona Theatre they’ve got a pair of Hallowe’en themed comedy events with Rapid Fire Theatre Friday and Oh Susanna! on All Hallows Eve.

Go Weekend, it’s your birthday, go Weekend

Bocce and beer could be a good weekend mix.

Bocce and beer could be a good weekend mix.

It’s the weekend, baby. That means it’s time for fun, without the pressure of waking up early and acting all professional at a job. Thank you Saturday and Sunday, thank you.

We’ve already talked about the big Pin-Up Girl party happening tonight (and hinted at the Tattoo festival in that same story) but that’s not all that’s happening in this happening city.

The tattoo and arts fest is at the Shaw. Which is right by the Edmonton Dragon Boat Festival, which has races in the river (obviously). They’re at Louise McKinney Park to be more specific.

The Fringe is going for new attendance records in its final weekend.

Blues Fest takes over Hawrelak Park.

Raising Spaces has an Eco Reno Demo Day, so you can learn about home renovations the green way.

You can pretend you know all about playing the ponies at the 80th running of the Canadian Derby at Northlands, Saturday.

Edmonton’s Chinatown and Little Italy combine forces for “East meets West.” Say “Hi” to Ted for us.

A great Winnipeg band, with a great name, Hot Live Guys plays New City Likwid Lounge with local greats Old Wives. See, I told you there was fun. The bill is rounded out with Regina rockers Hot Blood Bombers

Or you can get your Classic Rock on at the Century Casino with Chilliwack.

And on Monday, Mos Def rocks the house over at the Edmonton Event Centre.

New City Likwid Lounge (Jasper Ave and 102st)
WHOOOOOOOOP!
