May 30 Edmonton Headlines

Welcome to the end of May/beginning of June, Edmonton.

Make sure you let the City know what you think about urban agriculture. Especially if you want some chickens or bees around. Speaking of urban agriculture…Boyle Street’s getting its first community garden. Man, those things are popular.

Progress and freeways, vs. nature and fewer interchanges. Not a story that ever goes away.

Does Edmonton need a safe injection site? A conference about injection harm-reduction is on our city this week.

Edmonton Indy party tent: 2006-2010 – we’ll miss you, old friend. And the tent jokes that could have been.

A century-old church in Old Strathcona is in need of some serious repairs.

You ever just walk around the city?

Edmonton is losing six of its Blockbuster video stores. We’ll be getting some Targets though, if that helps at all.

An Edmonton-area salesperson has been banned by the Alberta Securities Commission.

St. Albert wants to limit the length of time RVs can stay in Wal-Mart parking lots. I had no idea this was a thing Wal-Mart encouraged.

More? Could there possibly be more to talk about?

You bet. (more…)

Wear your seatbelt. Take a picture.

I bet Alberta political junkies wish they had been wearing a seatbelt today! (So timely.)

This is an example of a photo that you could send in. I don't want to lose Scott's moustache to a car crash. (Interesting to note that Scott's Unknown Studio co-host, Adam, put me on to this contest.) Photo: Brittney Le Blanc

But, more seriously, there’s a new seatbelt campaign that’s asking for your help. It wants you to send in a photo of you and a loved one (or loved ones, if you have more than one).

You can read about the campaign here. You have until Friday to send in a shot of you and somebody you love/like/don’t want to see smashed up for not wearing a seatbelt. E-mail your photo, and remember to wear your seatbelt.

Speaking of seatbelts, wearing one really helped out the main character in the TV movie Intimate Stranger. What? You don’t watch terrible movies too?

Also, this being Tuesday, you can check out Troubadour Tuesday at Brixx. You get free tacos with Big Rock pints!

Ready for your close-up?

If you’re anything like me, you don’t tend to leave the house without a camera.

But, if you’re anything unlike me you have a fancy camera and are very much into professional tips and ways to take better photos.

Either way, how about some free tickets to the Edmonton Photographic Tradeshow? Yeah, that sounds nice doesn’t it? Now, I can’t just give you these two tickets to the Saturday show without making you jump through a hoop or two.

Lucky for you, my actual hoops are in the shop.

(Also lucky, that McBain Camera is cool enough to give us these tickets to give to you.)

So I’ll just ask you for a hilarious caption to the photo below. This is so arbitrary I’m going to go with the caption that makes me laugh most.

And…

Go!

Caption Me!

Scrambled #yeg

Totally random and with nothing to do with this post (outside of name); I had scrambled eggs in my breakfast burrito this morning. It was delicious.

Now, here’s some weird stuff I’ve spotted around this fair city of ours. I like to call this scrambled #yeg to combine one of my favourite foods and Twitter’s Edmonton hashtag. Oh, and I’ve done this before.

I can only imagine the first day of school, and this is your first classroom.

There has to be upwards of $12 on that boat.

The lady is real-size, the door is not. What's up with that door?!

This is over in Old Strathcona's theatre district. I don't know why. But it's cool.

Insert pants joke here.

Fall Fotos

Was spelling photo with an F too obvious? Can I still blame all the turkey I ate this weekend? I’ll be back on my A-game soon. (Once the turkey leftovers are all gone.)

I had mentioned a little ways back (before this snow) that I wanted a few glimpses of fall. I had no idea it was going to be so brief…

Anyway…here are some shots from me, from EdwardMonton and Janine Edwards, and me again. Let’s call it: Edmonton Fall.

While I’m talking about photos, our first blast of winter was captured well by Alex Abboud.

These bags are only happy when they are full of leaves.

Wind!

I think we’ve had just about enough of windstorms for this year, don’t you?

Street tree

Sally snapped that photo, above, in Old Strathcona. The older trees are really taking a beating.

While walking home last night I encountered this giant branch, which was blocking the sidewalk. It had been ripped from a street-side tree.

Over at the Edmonton Sun, they’ve got their own slideshow, with some good pictures of people’s hair and hats.

Letter from the Editor – Falling over you

This is one of my first glimpses of autumn.

This is one of my first glimpses of autumn.

We don’t ask a lot of you here, at the edmontonian.

(Oh, except that you read our stuff, keep coming back to the website, contribute your own stuff, tell your friends about the website, give us money in birthday cards, tell us we’re pretty…)

But I’m feeling very fally (is that a thing?) and think we should try and put a positive spin on the changing of the seasons.

The leaves are changing colours, and dropping quite quickly, and the summer warmth is quickly fading to memory. But we don’t have to be sad (though it’s our choice to mope).

No, we can embrace the golds and yellows of fall, enjoy the crunch under our feet and witness the slow build up of clothing layers.

If you happen to catch any of that with your camera, let me know. I’d love to feature some of your visions (or video) of fall in Edmonton right here. It might just be enough to get us to the Thanksgiving long weekend with a smile.

(We already got one photo, capturing the summer fading away, here, from our friend Deja.)

North- SIIIIDE!
