Edmonton’s original headlines
Good morning, Edmonton.
I feel like mixing it up today. This short week has me all turned around, so I figure we should end it a little different.
Today I’m only going to link to stories that you can only get from the individual newsroom I’m linking to. That is, if the CBC has a story nobody else in Edmonton appears to have I’ll post the story.
Now onto the originals (as best as I could determine them). Because every now and again we should refresh ourselves on who’s doing the most original reporting. Oh, and I’m going to try to keep the following stories centered in Edmonton.
from the Edmonton Journal:
Bring overtime under control: city auditor
Boyd years good for police (I agree. since the chief is better to win over the public than front-line officers. He’s the face of the EPS and, unless he’s putting place unorthodox rules, front-line officers don’t have to deal with the guy.)
Charities skimmed for $700K: CMHC
Eco-entrepreneurs launch Edmonton’s first free store (It’s like YegSwap, every day of the year.)
Edmonton’s Stantec buys U.S. firm Burt Hil (They keep buying and buying and buying.)
Local housing starts up for 14th straight month
Edmonton’s Muslims celebrate end of Ramadan with Eid ul-Fitr
Men ready to don high-heels to fight domestic violence
from the Edmonton Sun:
Firefighters free man buried in backyard
LRT plans moving forward (The NAIT line is totally a go!And there are open houses for the southeast line.)
Man convicted in bizzare assault case
Strip king moving into retirement (Chez Pierre’s Pierre is handing over the business.)
Cash, drugs siezed from Edmonton home
Grit your teeth…and hit the brakes (Slowing down in neighbourhoods is the worst thing ever. Or something.)
Oilers foundation should push cause (The Hicks on Six column has a few tidbits.)
from Metro Edmonton:
from 630CHED/iNews880:
Thursday morning apartment fire caused from “smokers materials”
World Suicide Prevention day touches Edmonton
from CBC Edmonton:
Nothing from CBC this morning (on their website anyway).
from CTV Edmonton:
City bars seek ‘safe’ accreditation (I think bars should have to visually identify their “safety” level. I’d like to see a similar sign in the window of restaurants relating to their health inspections.)
Special reward created in McCann case tops $50,000 (The Sun’s got this story too, but judging from timestamps it looks like CTV broke the news.)
City uses Twitter to promote video on airport land
Local students voice their concerns about education system
from Global Edmonton:
Edmonton man raises alarm about online classified sites (Though, if we’ve heard this story before, is he really raising the alarm? Wouldn’t he just be joining the chorus?)
Villeneuve airport (This is where people will be landing if the City Centre Airport closes.)
from CityTV Edmonton:
Nothing original from City today.

Now, here are the stories that everyone, or multiple newsrooms, got:
The Premier talking to Nancy Pelosi about the oilsands
Director James Cameron coming to visit the oilsands
Premier Ed telling us that no provincial money will go into a new Edmonton (or Calgary) arena
Suncor facing environmental charges (It’s not going to help the province’s stance that the Athabasca River is cleaner than a recent report cited, when Suncor is getting charged for lying about dumping waste into that very river.)
The saga of a Strathcona County councillor being cut off from his e-mail and Blackberry
Limited contamination at the City Centre Airport
Concerns over a proposed high-rise in Oliver
A Massage parlour pimp’s appeal quashed (Which would mean the prison sentence stands.)
Animals get down with country stars (This was listed as a Sun story, but I spotted it in Metro’s paper version later in the day.)

Final thoughts: It’s just one day, so it’s not surprising to see a few newsrooms without an original story posted to their websites yet. Though, if I rocked this for a week or so we’d see a few newsrooms without original stories more than once.
Also, it probably feels like the Sun came out of nowhere with all those stories today. It’s because I tend not to include little crime stories (and some breaking news stories, like the man buried in his yard), which happen to be its (and CHED’s) bread and butter.
And by the time I post these headlines, another newsroom may have already copied one of the stories I’ve listed as original.
Let’s do this thing: Morning Headlines

I hear those smiling goats live on the 20th floor.
Let me set aside the top news stories of the day for a moment and get real with you. Can we do that? Sure, we’re good friends by now.
At first, I was unsure how the headlines would go over. I read a bunch of newspapers every day (for my day job) and I’ve got a background in news, so keeping tabs on stories isn’t new. Sometimes I assume everyone else does the same thing.
But you don’t, do you? You have work and school and lives and can’t read a bunch of newspapers and watch TV news and listen to the radio (or check everyone’s websites) every day. Heck, I don’t do it all the time either.
After doing the headlines for a while I was sort of annoyed with getting up earlier to do them. Then, on our week off, I found myself wondering what was happening in the city. I missed keeping up to date.
Basically, I hope this helps you keep up to date. Now, let’s stop with the psycho-babble and do this thing. (And there are plenty of stories today!)
from the Edmonton Journal:
Youth home to shut down (This is Bosco, in Strathcona County.)
Three charges in Edmonton human trafficking case
Activist provides a voice for the voiceless (Edmonton’s newest writer-in-exile.)
Victoria School stages renewal
Norquest gets $1.4M grant (Why not? Most other schools are getting grants…)
Firm charged for pipeline leak
from the Edmonton Sun:
New software puts transit info at your fingertips (Yay! Now, how about ETS develops this for not-iPhones?)
Second cop chopper means 400-500 more flying hours
from CTV Edmonton:
Safety concerns over convicted cop killer being released
Public display labels west-end home as drug operation
Also, a question to City TV Edmonton; what’s up with you using Metro Edmonton for news coverage on the website? (New information: Turns out Metro gives City TV their copy and gets video for their website in return.)
I’m on my game today. That means I didn’t miss jack for top stories.
