Weekending

It’s a weekend of engagement, city shaping, and thought provocation here in Edmonton.

Thinkers will be at MacEwan’s city centre campus for CityCamp Edmonton, which is a day of talking about local government and community groups. Planners will be at the latest open house on the Alley of Light. And skeptics will be questioning everything at LogiCon 2011, put on by our local Skeptics.

If activism if more your things, and you want to dance, I suggest Dance Dance Revolution, a fundraiser for G20 defendants, at the ARTery.

It’s the last Oilers home game of the season tonight. Which means the merciful end is near, Oilers fans. Oh, and it’s the last time Paul Lorieau will sing the anthem at an Oilers game. Also at Rexall Place this weekend, the Edmonton Rush are home to the Colorado Mammoth.

Anyone interested in short fiction should be at the Stanley A. Milner Library tomorrow for Dzanc Day 2011. We’re the only Canadian site for this day of writing workshops. At the Milner branch on Sunday, youth spoken word workshops continue, for the Edmonton Poetry Festival 2011, with Cadence Weapon.

The quiet before the summer blockbusters is on at your nearest movie theatre.

In fashion…The Fashion Event continues through Saturday. Get some fashion! My Filosophy is hosting its Second Annual Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation Red Carpet Event, at Latitude 53. Surely there will be ladies of high-fasion at the Bossy Mama Annual Spring Brunch, this Sunday.

Around the concert halls…Harry Manx and David Lindley are at the Winspear for The Winspear Presents series of folk and world artists. The Edmonton Recital Society gala concert is at the Muttart Hall at Alberta College. How about a little Bach to get you ready for the Easter season?

There’s some burlesque at the Haven Social Club.

Matt Machete is at bohemia tomorrow night. This guy rocks. There’s a Fundraiser for Walk for the Cure at Wunderbar, with Brash Tax, Miek Headache, Nick Watt and more; which means good music, great beer, and a good cause. Old Ugly’s Liam Trimble has a new album out and he’s kicking it off Sunday at The Pourhouse.

Of course there are LRT delays. Gah!

I know a certain local website which is working on a TV show that is always looking for your videos

And next week is National Volunteer Week. Thanks for all the volunteering you do, Edmonton!

Update: I totally forgot about the back alley burgers. Tonight. Behind Hundred. 9:30-ish.

Thursday is now music night

Alright, so Friday and Staurday will probably still be the busiest nights of the week for live music in Edmonton, but Thursday is making a move.

Look at tonight:

That is among the other concerts and performances I did not mention.

Buckle up for Thursday night shows.

Also today, and running through Saturday, is a new The Fashion Event – because you love fashion!

(At the Best Western Westwood Inn.)

Yeg Swap and other events

Here's how the swap meet portion of #Yeg Swap will go down. The music and fun will just happen naturally.

If you didn’t know what I was going to open this week’s events listing with, you just haven’t been paying attention.

March 20 means #YegSwap over at The ARTery. 7pm. Until the fun ends.

We’ve got you bringing some cool stuff, that for some reason you just don’t want anymore (don’t tell me who did what on top of it). You’ll be trading that with other people in our super-efficient swap dome* and all the while you will be entertained by amazing Edmonton musicians Lyra Brown, The Mystery Ponies and The Joe.

And all for $2.

We’re basically paying you to come and have a great Saturday night.

One other thing worth mentioning, those musical acts are from three different genres. You don’t see a lot of that, outside of your iPod, so that could be worth the price of admission right there.

Alright, self-promotion aside, I’ll head over to ShareEdmonton and see if there’s anything else going on. But it probably won’t be as good as #Yeg Swap.

A neat event happening Saturday night (See, I’m not so biased I won’t mention other Saturday events.) is also a fundraiser. Out of Sight: A Sensory Experience is a “dining in the dark” meal, where a mask or sunglasses will limit your vision during the meal.

The Bounce is having a birthday party, their 5th.

Tonight (Friday) there’s an “Eeeeeeee…” inducing event at Best Buy Edmonton South, it’s a Twilight New Moon Launch Party.

It’s Randy Couture night at the Edmonton Rush game.

Here’s an interesting one from the Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues; Green Projects to Empower your Community. It comes with wine and cheese.

The Edmonton Boat & Sportsmen’s Show is a sign of spring, right?

There’s a rally for public services at the Alberta Legislature Saturday. After that, you should come to #YegSwap.

Naked on Jasper (it’s a cybercafe you pervs) is hosting the Busker’s Ball tonight. It’s got a great lineup of people you’ve probably seen at other venues and actually busking.

There’s some Postdata happening at Brixx Friday night.

The Pawn Shop has a great show Sunday, with Jay Malinowski of Bedouin Soundclash, Kinnie Starr and Michael Rault.

I mentioned the coming latin passion in my review of an Edmonton Symphony Orchestra show back here, but this weekend is “Musica Latina.” Which is sure to set your hips a-swaying.

Oh, and The Fashion Event is back, for your spring shopping needs, over at the Mayfield Inn & Suites.

And tickets are now on sale for St. Albert’s International Children’s Festival.

Whew!

p.s. #Yeg Swap is being put on by The League of Extraordinary Media, which is our new group of Edmonton super-hero bloggers and podcasters. In the battle between good and evil, choose local.

*There’s no swap dome. I only said that to increase your interest.

Christmas is a time for fashion

fasion pop-up“Hi ladies,”

I love that the update e-mail I get from the lovelies at The Fashion Event opens with “Hi Ladies,” as if no guy wants to know about sweet fashion deals.

Umm.

Christmas is coming and it would at least behoove us to know what our women want (without the help of Mel Gibson).

Yes, The Fashion Event is back, and for one whole month this time.

Things opened up today at 14238-85 Avenue (south of the 87 Avenue traffic circle, across from Laurier Heights School). Things will remain fashiony until December 24.

This is when you can get your fashion on:

Monday: 10-6
Tuesday: 10-6
Wenesday: 10-6
Thursday: 10-9
Friday:  10-6
Saturday:  10-5

Sunday: Take a break from shopping already.

The key to the event (outside of neat clothes you might not find anywhere else) is that you can register what you want for Christmas. Then, people like me will know what people like you* want to wear, and I can head down and buy it for you.

* “you” being people like my wife

The Fashion Event

The Fashion EventGee, you’d think with all the fashion stories we do around here we’d be called the fashiontonian.

Anyway…I know that you like to look your best, Edmonton. That’s why I thought of you when I peeped a handbill for The Fashion Event at a local coffee shop.

The Fashion Event is an indie company that holds big clothing sales, or events, throughout the year. One is happening right now.

It’s not one brand, it’s lots of brands. It’s not one or two sizes, it’s (as they put it) sizes delicate to delicious.

It runs this weekend at the Mayfield Inn & Suites (until 7pm today, 10am-5pm Saturday) and they’ve got another big sale planned for December.

Now that I’m in the fashion loop I’ll try to keep you updated.
