Gregg Beever wants to do, and don’t, you

By Gregg Beever

Good news Edmonton, it’s March!

Christmas is over and St. Valentine has packed his chalky candy hearts away for another year, meaning a flood of suddenly singles will soon be prowling the city’s nightlife looking for love.

Wait…what?

I’ll bet that’s what you are thinking, but lets face it, Edmonton, this is time of year when a lot of people become single. We’ve all been there, no one wants to dump their boyfriend or girlfriend before Christmas, or on Valentine’s Day, so we gut it out. Sure, it’s cowardly, but breaking up is hard; we can hardly be blamed for not wanting to make it any harder. So we wait.

Then in late February – BLAM! – pull the trigger, execution style!

So to prep you for Edmonton’s forthcoming 2010 spring singles season I’ve compiled a list of dating dos and don’ts. Once you’re finished reading I guarantee you will be ready to sow your wild oats, or whatever bad prairie analogy you want to use. (more…)

Some stuff going on in some places

I really thought my photo was going to make the poster.

And a good day to you, fair Edmonton.

All excited for the weekend, are we? Well, other than sleeping in, perhaps you’d like to try one of these out…

Again, I’m peering into the goody bag of ShareEdmonton this week. They’ve got one of the biggies of winter; The Silver Skate Festival goes this weekend in Hawrelak Park. And it’s not even freezing cold.

Speaking of skating, the revamped Bill Hunter arena opens this weekend and the city is offering some free (free!) skating.

Carey Hart is signing autographs at the West49 in WEM. That’s pretty cool.

Also cool is the Royal Winnipeg Ballet doing “Moulin Rouge,” at the Jube.

Seeing that The Hat has a brunch on Saturdays. Anyone been? Is it just breakfast burgers?

The Fray could show you how to save a life (*groan*) at the Winspear Centre on Sunday.

I’m out.

Scrambled #yeg

Totally random and with nothing to do with this post (outside of name); I had scrambled eggs in my breakfast burrito this morning. It was delicious.

Now, here’s some weird stuff I’ve spotted around this fair city of ours. I like to call this scrambled #yeg to combine one of my favourite foods and Twitter’s Edmonton hashtag. Oh, and I’ve done this before.

I can only imagine the first day of school, and this is your first classroom.

There has to be upwards of $12 on that boat.

The lady is real-size, the door is not. What's up with that door?!

This is over in Old Strathcona's theatre district. I don't know why. But it's cool.

Insert pants joke here.

James Cameron: Dragon Slayer

So, I was at West Edmonton Mall the other day and wanted to check out the fire-breathing dragon.

As you can see from the cellphone video above, I had to stay on the main level of the movie theatre. Why? Why wouldn’t I venture up toward the IMAX level and get right up in that scaly beast’s fiery nostrils?

James Cameron. That’s why.

You people helped ruin a little girl's day.

You see, up there is where Avatar is showing forever. And people, two months in, were still lining up an hour+ before showtime. Because of that, the staff at the theatre wouldn’t let anybody upstairs. I guess they were afraid I brought my 3D glasses from home.

You know, they could have just put a staff member in front of the theatre door.

They should have, because a little girl and her mom tried to get a closer to the dragon. No dice, said the 15-year-old keeper of the velvet rope.

James Cameron may never have slayed a dragon (outside of CGI) but he slayed that child’s chances at seeing something pretty cool, up close.

Thank goodness Nicolas Sparks has what it takes to slay the monster that is Avatar. Children of the world will soon be able to get close enough to our dragon that their eyebrows may be singed, just a little.

Lunar New Year

Last weekend I popped into the Ice Palace at West Edmonton Mall to check out the Lunar New Year’s party.

Here are some of the colourful sights.

Clearly the fact we won a disposable camera means there is more to come…

Click on any of the photos for a bigger, better, look.

Some stuff to do

Taking a look around Edmonton this weekend, here are a few items that caught my eye…

There are monster trucks at Rexall Place this weekend!!!!!!!

Nearby, and slightly quieter, is the Edmonton Renovation Show, at Northlands’ Expo Centre.

It’s almost Chinese New Year’s, so kick things off with a bang over at the big celebration at West Edmonton Mall. Plus, you get an excuse to go to that giant emporium of shopping goodness.

German Mardi Gras is this weekend. I hadn’t heard of this but before but it sounds like a good time.

The Art Gallery of Alberta’s got a party Saturday. Tickets at the door only. This place is popular.

Susan Aglukark is playing the Myer Horowitz tonight. Neat.

Edmonton’s First October Weekend

Weekends are a time for good friends, good times and good cupcakes.

Weekends are a time for good friends, good times and good cupcakes.

You smell that? That’s the weekend. And dead leaves. But mostly weekend.

Yes, fall arrived to remind us that we are but playthings in Mother Nature’s world. Enjoy the crisp mornings though, since they shall soon turn to frigid beginnings of days that are much too short.

And we can all rejoice, since this weekend is full of awesome.

Apologies for the random order of events. But, hey, it’s Friday and spending an extra minute trudging through possible fun options is way better than work.

Way better.

Let’s start with an event that will likely not be something you can do on a whim (stretching is not always enough, practice helps) the CIBC Run for the Cure, Sunday. Sounds like it will be a chilly start to the race. Cheering squads: bring some mitts.

The Handmade Mafia is back at it, Saturday. Let’s go buy mitts together.

For the outdoorsy among you, Mountain Equipment Co-op is doing a gear swap, Sunday. Bring your old stuff (or stuff from the activity that broke your leg and you hate now) and get some new stuff.

Pure Speculation 2009, is all weekend at the Shaw Conference Centre and Happy Harbour on 124th Street. Science Fiction, comics, fun.

The latest Homeless Connect is Sunday. This is where services and help are provided to the homeless. Things like haircuts too. Seems like a practical idea when I mention haircuts, doesn’t it?

The Edmonton Wildcats take on the Edmonton Huskies in the Prairie Football Conference regular season ender, at Clarke Park. Saturday. 7pm.

Speaking of sports, the University of Alberta Golden Bears and Pandas have another busy weekend.

Oh, and a little thing called the NHL is underway. And fantasy hockey.

The Anarchist Bookfair runs Saturday and Sunday. Which seems very orderly.

Friday night is Pecha Kucha 5. The “chit chat” goes Old School.

Some friends of the website are playing at Wunderbar on Whyte. Come check out Van Funk & the Lebarons, and say Hi.

Also Saturday night, in the party column, CJSR is having its Fundrive wrap party at The Artery. Do it. The catering is going to be excellent.

Kenny Rogers is playing at the River Cree Casino, Sunday. Kenny F’n Rogers.

Saturday, momstown.ca is doing mom and tots stuff at Bonnie Doon.

West Edmonton Mall has roller derby and a dive-in movie. Let’s just hope the kid at the top of the water slide doesn’t hold things up while engrossed in the film. But roller derby down a water slide, that’s something to see. (It’s actually going to be in Phase 4.)

Oh, and something I’ll likely be dragged to, Toy Story and Toy Story 2 in 3D. For two weeks only!

Win your favourite Aunt $500

This excited young man is one of the e-postcard options from the EEDC contest.

This excited young man is one of the e-postcard options from the EEDC contest.

Do you have a favourite aunt visiting you this fall?

Maybe just some friends or family swinging through Edmonton? If so, and if they, or you, like to shop, here’s a contest that could win you $500.

Though the $500 is only good at stores at West Edmonton Mall. I hope there are enough stores there to spend that kind of money in… I mean, it’s no Southgate.

The Edmonton Economic Development Corporation (EEDC) is going be holding an “Invite Friends and Family” draw August 31 for just such a gift card.

You go to the website (this section, specifically) choose an e-postcard (all with great images of Edmonton), enter your name, their name and e-mail, etc… and send the postcard. When they get their postcard they are asked if they want to enter the draw for $500 of WEM money.

You should probably tell them ahead of time that you’re doing this so they do enter.

The EEDC will be holding another draw like this at the end of the year if you don’t win. Or if you have an aunt that can’t figure out her e-mail.

FOR THE LAST TIME!

Chapters in WEM has finally enforced their controversial new policy.

Thanks Josh!

It’s just you and me now, Megatron.

Optimus

This comes via our friend Joe; it’s from last night’s Citytv pre-screening of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, at Scotiabank Theatre in WEM.

Rumour has it that Optimus didn’t actually have a pass, but they let him in anyway; how can you say no to a guy in a cardboard transformers suit? (Remember that next time you have a job interview or a first date.)
